I know many people who choose to be childfree and I support their decision. Even if I think they would make wonderful parents, each person is free to make whatever decision they want about reproducing.

I personally went to many parenting classes (usually offered for free by community outreach programs). I was not a low-income mother and I definitely don't live off the government, but I wanted to make sure I was as prepared as I could possibly be, before I tried my hand in parenting. As things are right now, I have a beautiful, well-behaved 2 year old son and a daughter on the way. The parenting classes helped loads and I suggest that they make them mandatory.

I agree with the OP that many people out there who should not have children do have children and it is a horrible situation! I would be all for licensed parenting, but I think that would be socialistic. (I really wish people would be required to pass certain basic function tests and mental capacity tests before being allowed to have children though!)

I will say that it does kind of make me sad when smart people decide not to have children, because the world would probably be a better place with their children in it, but as I said before. I fully support anyone who chooses not to have children for any reason and I will never bad-mouth them for it!

Children from Northern Europe are more "adjusted".....Huh?

....why is it then that Denmark has the highest per capita suicide rate of the world?....

That's really good statistical analysis. Last year, One Dane out of 7,352 committed suicide, and you are going to cite that as evidence that the other 7,351 must not be well adjusted, either.

Maybe Danes live a lot longer than Americans, and lots of suicides are among the elderly. (There is a correlation between suicide rate and life expectancey,) Maybe the Danish culture is so well-adjusted, that if a person has a reason to want to commit suicide, they let him.

Beyond Lamaze I didn't take any classes but I read so many parenting books before and during my first pregnancy I felt well prepared. That was 16+ years ago. During my more recent pregnancies I joined parenting boards. These seem to be incredibly helpful for improving parenting for the most part. I like the wealth of information available from being able to connect to so many parents in the same phase of parenting. It helps expand parenting skills while supporting parents in understanding that the issues they struggle with are not just theirs alone.

My-my-my. All that anger directed about children. Some of you chose not to have children. Well done you! You obviously know yourself well enough that NO WAY should you have one. Too many parents out there didn't want them, had them, and seriously resented it afterward.

As for the tax breaks, well there are all kinds of tax breaks out there for the financial savy but no one wants to get rid of all those, do we? The tax breaks and funding for the schools from our taxes go towards funding our next generation of leaders and businessmen/women. Those are the ones who decide on important issues that matter to ALL of us like Social Security and Medicare. They are the future, we are the past. Childless people live for themselves, Parents live for the future.

Well with overpopulation, if EVERYONE had kids, it would be quite a bleak future.
But hey, what do I care? I won't have any kids left on the earth once I'm dead.

me neither Of course, I may decide to adopt one day but having biological children is not something I want to do. Especially considering I have a genetic disorder and wouldn't feel right in the possibility of passing it along to my children.
