My wife and I rented a two-room house with electricity and running water and a big yard with wonderful grapefruit trees, for $20 a month, in a little town in Paraguay. That was 15 years ago, the rent has probably doubled since then.

On a little island in Indonesia, it cost the two of us $200 a month for a little cottage behind a family house, meals and/or kitchen privileges included. Ten years ago.
