Mmmm yes of course... but you forget a slight detail. Throughout the rest of the world, the cost associated with the standard of living you refer to is completely unparalleled to that of the United States

I agree! Our worst is still better than any other places best. If we go down and the world lost our trade, aid and tourist bucks....by default, they will all go down with us.
That's like 1950s old school thinking. You can delude yourself if you want, but it won't happen that way.

My wife and I rented a two-room house with electricity and running water and a big yard with wonderful grapefruit trees, for $20 a month, in a little town in Paraguay. That was 15 years ago, the rent has probably doubled since then.
On a little island in Indonesia, it cost the two of us $200 a month for a little cottage behind a family house, meals and/or kitchen privileges included. Ten years ago.

Have a friend that moved to Bolivia a short time ago, very inexpensive living there.......But definatly NOT impressed with the medical equipment/care available there.
