This really doesn't affect me...I don't care how much media coverage over-exposed celebrities are getting. Apparently there is an audience for that kind of celebrity overkill, and ironically I wonder if maybe part of that audience is made up of the very people who complain about it?
There really is no need to complain - it's not like the old days when we only had 3 network channels to choose from (plus PBS). The remedy is within reach...pick up that remote control and go to one of the 95 other channels available! I know I can always find something that interests me at any time of day...so I'm not stuck watching Lindsy Lohan's latest rehab adventure and neither is anyone else.
We are a nation of sheep and ostriches, very passive as a public. Don't know when the backlash will happen to take the country back. There is an ignore button on the TV, is called Power OFF. Might be a start...
You make a great point. Ultimately, the media IS us. If we as a society decide that we have had enough of this nonsense, we'd stop watching. Their ratings would shrink, the sponsors would shrivel up, and message would be sent. However, we keep watching, so this must be what we want.

if this is the way news will be in the future, i'm very scared. it's gonna be like the homicides that happen in Washington D.C. and PG county get like 30 seconds of coverage and this head-shaving will get 10 min of coverage. We're in big trouble.

I cancelled all but the local channels. I kept that for the weather and the evening news. Other than that the only other show I occasionally watch is "Bones."
Television could be a lot better and provide "real" news if people truly cared more about learning. Unfortunately many people would rather passively watch it and try to find validity for their own lives by looking at those who achieved "fame and success(?)" and then finding a sense of cruel satisfication when they finally fall down or get taken down.
I think the backlash to take the country back has already started. Checkout some of my thoughts on newenglandopinion.com.
Maybe when people that deserve celebrity status are not attention seeking entertainers (I use the term entertainers loosely) and obnoxious ball players that spit and slap each other's butts. In this pathetic society, brains, intellect and actual acccomplishments do not rate high. What does this say about our culture? The way the media goes on and on about some drugged up blond nitwit, you have to wonder why they would continue to do it if nobody is listening. They must have some type of demand for this crap. That is scarey.
