Why has all debate in this forum reverted to "because he's a socialist", "because taxes would increase" or "you're a moron"? Is anyone up for INTELLIGENT debate anymore???

Part of the problem is internet anonymity. People tend to be much more civil in face-to-face discussions. One exception would be where a mob dynamic could come into play. One-on-one discussions, in person, are still the best way for humans to communicate.

I just posted this on another thread, if I may, I will post it here as well. I just refuse to allow anyone to intimidate me, and I'm tired of the nastiness also.

For generations members of my family have served in various branches of the military including the current one who has gone to Iraq. They have served during, WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq. In the army, navy, marines, and the air force. They have served as enlisted and as officers. We even have documentation from the Civil War (both north and south), the war of 1812, and the Revolution. So don't you dare call me unpatriotic or not a real American. Attacking someone and calling them unpatriotic because they don’t agree with you goes against everything our founding fathers believed. Remember Patrick Henry? Look him up sometime.

No man thinks more highly than I do of the patriotism, as well as abilities, of the very worthy gentlemen who have just addressed the House. But different men often see the same subject in different lights; and, therefore, I hope it will not be thought disrespectful to those gentlemen if, entertaining as I do opinions of a character very opposite to theirs” Patrick Henry March 1775.

By the way, the above quote is from his speech “Give me liberty or give me death”

While I saw the need to go into Afghanistan I have never seen the need to go to Iraq. I think the Iraq war is a travesty and a tragedy. It was started by a neocon administration that went into office intending to invade Iraq. That has been well documented. At the same time genocide is being ignored in Darfur and other countries. The bravery of our young men and women in Iraq is not in question. The current administration used 9-11 as justification not only to wage war unnecessarily. They used it as an excuse to destroy our civil rights our right to privacy, our right to habeas corpus, our right to due process. If you aren’t angry about that fine. But do not dare call me anything other than a real American. My ancestors fought so that you and I both could be free to speak openly. I won’t allow you or anyone else to take that away from me.

Yes, let's have some intelligent debate. What's the topic?

I have attempted to debate seriously here. For the most part, the best I get is "I know you are but what am I?" I argue facts, and get the same emotional rhetoric or juvenile ranting in return. If, however, I have changed just one person's mind, my work here was a success.

Instead of looking for intelligent debate in a sea of widely varied levels of discourse, try looking for meaningful debate instead and you might have better luck.

Yes, much of what transpires here is little more than neener neener, but there are folks willing to engage on more than just what is on the surface. It may take some time to find out which folks are engaging at a level you prefer but we do have all walks of life.

Ignore what you may consider cursory banality and focus on those your are comfortable with. This is just the nature of an internet forum.

PS added benefit is that it does teach one patience.

I think you can thank George Bush and Dick Cheney for this - they were pretty darn good over the last 7 years in insinuating people were unpatriotic if they disagreed with the war in Iraq, the Patriot Act, and warrantless wire taps...
