In the global scheme of things, we know no real poverty.

Our 'poor' people in section 8 housing, at least around my area, have cell phones, iPods, video games, and spinning rims. I know since I fill-up at two gas stations that are next to public housing projects and for over a decade has spoken with the residents. They are much more wealthy than any poor I have encountered in South America who have two outfits and one pair of shoes.

But what about those people I drive by every morning who sleep on the street with no health care or a change of clothing? Sure there are some ghetto superstars, but they are likely selling Cocaine/crack and that's how they afford all that stuff. The others live 10 to an apartment, with no heat, little food and no education. I've been to most of Europe, Australia, Israel, the Caribbean, Cuba, Mexico and Canada, and the only place that has the same kind of abject poverty that we have is Mexico. Cuba does not have it, nowhere in Europe did I see it (though Slovakia was poor, it was just crappy, not abjectly so), and Israel was still less poor than many parts of this country. I lived in New Orleans before and there was a truly sad place with whole families living on the street. Or in San Francisco where the homeless can't afford the obscene cost of living.

But remember, the rule is that, no matter how bad off someone is, you can't help him or her unless you can certify that this in fact is the worst-off person in the world. Unless you can do that, you have to continue your search for whoever that person is and help him or her first. That's Republican Welfare in a nutshell...

The subsidization of poverty only begets more poverty. Eventually, the only rich people are the bureaucrats and their buddies. The small business owner and the diminishing middle class disappear and join the poor as their wealth is redistributed to the well connected that make empty promises to continue their reign of power. Big government is a direct threat to your livelyhood and your freedom.

Even some of our "poorest" folks have TV, cell phones, computers.....
When "wealth" is redistributed--EVERYONE gets poorer--yes--even the poor! We want EVERYONE to have more tomorrow than they have today....that's what capitalism is. That means EARNING your money and being able to keep it and use it to make more! There is plenty to go around...but there isn't enough to take and divide it....no one grows that way!

So, we now finally have the explanation of how Bangladesh got so poor. All those billions of dollars thrown at the poor in Bangladesh keeps begetting more poverty. If the Bangladesh government would only stop giving all those plasma TVs to everybody, they could start being rich. I've always wondered why everybody there is so poor, and thanks to TexanPatriot, we now know what makes people stay poor. A sociological breakthrough.
