I think I am done being friends with someone where I live based on this issue alone. The night of the election this republican person I know said "why should everyone have health care if they don't work for it?"

This boggles my mind - the mean spiritedness of it all. I mean, how about we end the wars, stop spreading death and destruction, and use that money to take care of each other in this country?

Anyway, I just don't have time for someone with this thinking in my life. My mother is the same way. However, she is 87 and doesn't seem to get that tax dollars are paying for her health care, yet she begrudges others from having it. I can't very well toss her out of my life, but I abhor her thinking.

What is wrong with these people?

movin' on, why would you break off a friendship with someone who has a different political opinion than you? I have friends/family who span the realm of the political spectrum, and although we argue, I love them just the same. If you want to change the world for the better, stop your hate filled ranting, it's understanding and compromise that changes things.

It has to do with what someone determines to be the proper role of government.

Conservatives and libertarians view the government is supposed to enforce laws and protect the nation from foreign threats and not much else. So there is no inherent disconnect from supporting a war but opposing a national healthcare system.

This thread isn't about why I would end things with someone from a different political persuasion.

I really want to know WHAT IS WRONG WITH THESE PEOPLE? BTW, no hate filled ranting here. I support Life. Republicans support Death.

The proper role of this government is to take care of its people - not go nation building.

We are a liberal nation now. Government can do whatever they want.
Obama can overturn Prop 8 and redefine marriage, ask Congress to write a bill on this and approve it.

Universal healthcare comes with liberalism so it should be welcomed with open arms.

Having war is not being a liberal, to be liberal is to be generous.

Iran will test OBAMA. Prediction for 2009 is an IRAN war. Will Obama declare it???

Sometimes war is meant to stop death and destruction, for example defeating the Nazis and liberating the Jews. Sometimes you've just got to fight if you're attacked like Pearl Harbor.

Would you agree with a decision to send troops to Darfur? Do you think the UN should immediately withdraw from the Congo?

Not sure of your correlation between universal health and military action.

May I interject that the people described herein are similar to most evangelicals and the religious right wing. They oppose abortion and gay marriage but have no problem that their government arrests and tortures innocent people. These no-universal-health-care-but-yes-to-war people are no different. Neither camp makes sense to me, although Frank's post #3 above helps shed some light on this (for me) mind-boggling disconnect.

The liberal/conservative division is not a light switch. In fact, they are just imaginary and manufactured polar opposites designed to simplify the argument and make the choices easier. Americans can't handle big words, you see. Things have to be reduced for their consumption.

Nothing changes with Obama. The man speaks eloquently about unity and peace from behind 3 inches of bulletproof glass. The corporatocracy is simply changing puppets. Depression and world war await. Wouldn't have changed if McCain had won. (Sorry to digress the thread).

Considering the huge amounts of foreign aid we send to other countries including, of course, the $10-12 billion a month spent on Iraq (with its large surplus), surely the health of this country's populace should be our number one national priority! I don't understand why so many folks have an argument with national health care - we already have medicare and social security (undeniably "socialistic" programs) - why not national health care?

As I posted on another thread re: healthcare, Dennis Kucinich's health care plan would substantially reduce the out-of-sight costs of health care by eliminating much of the current bureacracy - and many corporate insurance companies who demand huge premiums then often end up not paying or refusing to pay for what they term, "pre-existing conditions".
