Reason: Moved from General US, since it's not related to geography.
I love learning about my heritage. I'm no better than anyone else, but I like getting to learn about when my ancestors came from Scotland and England. It's very interesting.
There is nothing wrong with knowing your heritage. Its ok to call yourself American, but American is not an ethnicity or race, its simply just a nationality. There are reasons why many people in America refer to themselves by their orgins first then american second; ex. Italian-American, Mexican-American, African-American, Asian-American and so on. You see, America today was not the America over 40 years ago and beyond. America didn't always treat every citizen like a American citizen(this is still true to an extent today) and a human being.
Everyone's ancestors migrated here at different times in history, so some (usually the more recent immigrants or decendants of) have a stronger connection to their roots than others. Best example: Mexican Americans
Those people whose ancestors came here many generations ago have pretty much lost that connection and see themselves as just American (the Scots-Irish of appalachia are a good example).
And then there are those like me who are Euro-mutts, who have little connection with a foreign origin. Because our ancestors came from all over the place we can't identify strongly with any one country.

You have a disturbingly skewed world view. You know that, right?
Why not just stay away from threads of that type if it bothers you so much? Some of us enjoy learning about our ancestry; is that so hard to understand?
american culture is 500 years old (predates the declaration of independence) everybody in the world is clear on what is american culture except us.
americans dont like each other very much do they.
always trying to emphasize that they are not really americans they are from somewhere else.
until they find out what somewhere else is really like.
