If a woman joins the military with the full knowledge that she might be called upon to fight or otherwise serve in a combat zone, it's her prerogative. Granted, there is the chance that male combatants on the enemy side might choose to violate a female soldier. That is something additional for a potential female recruit to consider. But again, that should be her choice, in my opinion.
I think as long as women are not held to 'lesser standards' internally within the military, then yes, they should be allowed to fight in combat. However, I'm not sure if that is the case.
I don't know about the U.S. Military - but I know at The Citadel, for example, women get through far easier than men. Not only are they held to easier standards, but the "unofficial" standards are completely unenforced, because you will be expelled in a heartbeat for messing w/ a female.
In Israel, women are required along with men to do compulsory military service for a minimum amount of time. And because of events over there, I'm sure female soldiers are in the line of fire as much as their male associates. Granted, it's pretty much a necessity for everyone there to "do their time" in the military... but if Israeli women can do it, why not American women?
Sure why not, some of us are really good shots!!!! If that is what they want, I say fine.
