No more failing grades in high school
OK, now because some students are dumb enough to not pass courses they now are going to get more time. How liberal of them. LOLOLOLOL The fact is that if high school students can't get passing grades then they should not graduate. We already have enough uneducated people that graduated high school in this country and half of them even go on to college. Then, of course, they get to take remedial classes because they didn't learn what they should have before college. It is all very sickening. Just another school to watch for so one does not hire any of their uneducated graduates.

Grand Rapids high school students cannot get failing grade under new policy
GRAND RAPIDS -- No Grand Rapids high school students will find failing grades on their report cards when they arrive this week.
Instead, students who performed poorly will see an "H" for "held" and an opportunity to make up the work and earn a passing grade by the end of the next trimester.

That's silly. Hasn't babying children for the past generation already seen it's consequences?
How many kids are going to be able to survive college or even high school at this rate, if they do this?

Well, colleges are now going to look at applicants from high schools here and think they are suspect anyway. It's an injustice to those in there that are actually making the grade because they've been lumped in the pool with the non-performers. Sigh...as if things in MI aren't bad enough.

That's so crazy! In the little bit of teaching I've done, I've encountered enough freshmen who were not at all prepared for college to be just a little miffed by the situation. I'm also one who thinks that universities don't need to offer remedial/transitional courses, and that students should go to community colleges if they don't qualify for the regular courses. I've been called elitist for saying that, though.
But I've never heard of people not getting F's. I don't understand what they think they're going to accomplish with that! I just think it would produce more people who are not prepared for college and will have a more difficult time getting through a degree program.

Not many, but it seems to be exactly what they want. Hell, this past generation is about as ignorant as can be and it is only getting worse. YES, there are smart ones out there, but overall...just a bunch of rejects that can't even count change. Sad really for this country because it is what the country is becoming.

My question is why they decided to do this.
Is it because of external pressure (media, parents, etc.), or is it just something they came up with out of the blue to try and protect their numbers?

OMG!!! I can't believe that there is someone else around here that also believes that remedial calsses are wrong in college. It makes me sick that so many are so ignorant and uneducated out there all while the parents talk about how their kid is some honor student. LOLOLOLOLOL

I think it's a bad idea, and I just feel like it's inappropriate. If I'd scored low enough in math on the standardized tests (and I almost did), I would've gone somewhere else to take a remedial math course so I could move forward. What's the shame in that? Really? Sometimes people don't get everything they were supposed to in high school, and it's necessary, IMO.
