I haven't noticed any increase in rudeness at all, actually.
I have, from everything to the idiots on the road to cashiers who can't even be bothered to say hi & thank you, like they're putting themselves out if they had to say three words.

Well, traffic has gotten worse, and I've noticed that migrants from LA have brought their driving habits to Colorado, but they aren't nasty people -- just don't know know how to drive.
But in terms of cashiers and the general public? I haven't noticed that at all. *shrug*

Really? Maybe your stores actually have polite cashiers, that'd be nice. I usually find the rudeness of cashiers at grocery stores, it seems to be a requirement.
I notice it sometimes but I'm also quick to make a comment that might start a conversation with the person in line with me or next to me on a plane or anywhere really.
I've met some very interesting people that way.
And I always try to remember that we have no idea what people are going through- that person who is driving like a maniac may be on their way to the hospital- or the funeral of a loved one. Or on their way home from a horrible event. Or from getting fired. Or from learning they are ill. Or on the way to see their long lost love.
So I try to give the patience that I think I might need if I were dealing with something huge in my life.
I can only hope that paying it forward will net me the same patience and compassion when I need it.

Man, you really give people the benefit of the doubt, a rare quality nowadays. Here's another rude pet peeve of mine....when men get on an elevator or a bus before a woman. I'm sorry, maybe that seems old-fashioned but it's just a rude thing. Also, while on the elevator at work, there are some people that will just stare at you or look you up or down. What is up w/that??

Maybe so. Although I'm not sure I really have the expectations. I see a difference between "fast" and "rude".
Now if there's one thing that's emerged since the 90s, it's people on cell phones at the cashiers, making everyone else late. But that's because etiquette hasn't caught up with technology.

Oh yeah, I think the advent of cellphones has increased the level of rudeness in all social aspects. I used to have a friend who would, no lie, sit on my couch, at a table at a bar, etc. & just text away the entire time. When my friend from Malaysia was here for a short time, we went to a bar & hung out outside. Instead of sitting w/us & getting to know him better, she spent the entire time texting. I find that sort of behavior reprehensible & very telling of a persons character.
