No, it wasn't as bad. At least not for me or conservatives I know. B/c in the end, we figured he wasn't a bad guy, and he didn't promise weirdo pie-in-the-sky stupid crap like Obama has (and will now happily renege on). I was a little worried back then about Hillary influencing Bill with her crazy health care plan, but thankfully, she didn't actually get to be president - just play one while her husband was in office.

Mackinac

Actually, more Republicans are behind Obama than were behind Clinton when he was elected.

There's a lot of utter tripe that's been posted in this thread. Basically, the right-wing has always been sleazy. They have always lied, they have always resorted to scare tactics, and they have always wrapped themselves in God and the flag for cover. This goes back at least to McCarthy and the Red Scare which is about as far back as I can remember. It winds through the opposition to Brown v BOE and hatred for the various civil rights acts. It was tied up in Nixon's "southern strategy", as well as opposition to the anti-war movement and of course Roe v Wade. But the kicker came when first Agnew and then Nixon were shamed out of office for their crimes. Those affronts were a turning point that launched a vicious right-wing vendetta that has been carried out ever since. From the moment that the right-wingers then teamed up with the fundie extremists, there has been no point to looking for a time when the right-wing was not this bad. There hasn't been one.

1992 wasn't really that bad. I think a lot of Republicans were ticked off at Bush Sr. for ruining what Reagan had done to promote the party. So overall, a lot of GOP members (such as myself) voted for Clinton as sort of "revenge". There wasn't a lot of issue when he took office. This was also before the religious divide kicked in. It was first in 1996 that I started noticing attacks on religion/tradition/family values coming from both sides. I voted for Clinton again in 1996, there still wasn't a lot of chaos.

When 2000 came around, I did not vote, but I believe 2000 was the first year that post-election drama was violent and rather chaotic. Name calling, fighting, personal attacks at every possible angle - things got pretty nasty. I would go further to believe that the year 2000 started the trend of the losers hating the winner, and the winners basking in glory. Trust me, if you think hearing about the election in 2008 was bad, you were definately not watching the news in 2000...

...2004 was kind of a boring election year. I honestly expected Kerry to win, although he wasn't a strong candidate (IMO). It was practically a steal for the Democrats, but somehow they managed to lose . The backlash was pretty nasty in 2004, not really worse than 2000.

Now 2008.. Holy hell. From the primaries all the way up to post-election there has been nothing but hate, personal attacks and vendettas. Not just on the candidates either, but also their families. Now it seems like most of the name calling as been contained in conspiracy theories and random blogs throughout the internet. Still, 2008 has probably been the most partisan election year I have ever seen.

I would like to add that the internet wasn't a political battlefield back in the 1990's. I am not so sure if that is a good thing or not, because we had to rely solely on what was on the news. It is nice to have a Democrat in office again though, the hissy fits they throw when they lose can get quite old after 8 years...

I thought it was pretty even-handed. The facts are the facts. And it isn't like I tore into your ridiculous "Gore conceded" meme or anything...

Mackinac

They spent all eight years going after him, wasting millions in tax payer money in the process (something the "Conservatives" are great at, spending.)
