I don't think the "cremation" was the malfunction...THIS was the problem. "On Monday a judge sentenced both to 16 months in prison and ordered them to pay more than $20,000 back to the state for collecting Allmond’s retirement and social security checks."
My co-workers and I once got in a debate about the legalities of burrying your family members on your property. After checking around we found it was legal as long as the area was approved (cant have remains leaching into the water table). The body did need to be pronounced by authorities tho.

Bingo, the reason they did what was reported was to hide the fact that she had passed away, so they could continue to collect her social security.
They were evading the reporting of her death to the government, so benefits could be appropriately terminated.

This actually happens more than most realize....With nursing home prices being what they are, many elderly are taken care of by a relative and unfortunately not all of those "relatives" are good people...next thing you know they are addicted to Aunt Bessie's SS check and other things(like her meds for example) and since nobody ever comes and visits Aunt Bessie anymore, when she passes on they just keep going with their business as usual.A very sick world we live in these days.

At first glance I thought this would be a do it yourself funeral but collecting SS & retirement for months can only mean they didn't obtain a death certificate. Sick nasty garbage. This woman raised them... so much for gratitude and respect!
Assuming that the relatives didn't actually kill the old girl (bif assumption), I would suspect that they were continuing to collect government payments like they were taught to do.
Not wierd at all.
Keeping grannys money by not reporting her dead. This one is easy to figure out.
