Pornography: more exciting than your spouse? (drugs, school, economy, money)

Pornography. One word that brings pleasure, excitement, disgust, depression and pain. I've asked myself why our society is so enamored with porn? What is it's allure? I remember a "Friends" episode where Joey and Chandler are ecstatic about getting a free porn channel. After watching it for awhile, the images seem to change how they interact with others. Granted this is only a sitcom that is in syndication, but what they went through on that episode is indicitive of many men in our society.

I've seen firsthand how the use of pornography has broken apart marriages, trust is gone and jobs lost. IMO it is a sad day when viewing pornography becomes more exciting or appealing than spending time with your spouse.

For sure the reasons vary with age and other situations.

The 'forbidden' fruit is always more exciting ... like the free money people get from stealing and other criminal activity ... it spends a whole lot easier... and feels a whole lot more enjoyable...

Part of the allure is the same as for many of the other taboo or forbidden things (smoking, drinking, sex, gambling, drugs, etc). Parents, re-inforced by the schools, re-inforced by the churches, preach about the evils of all these things, and as soon as you say it's wrong, people are gonna go see what all the noise is about... try it for themselves, make up their own minds. The minute you want anyone to try something... just tell them to stay away from it... and of course, if it's forbidden fruit the price goes up.... Say what...like that bloody, gory car wreck down on the corner...tell the kids to not go down there...the next sound you hear is the screen door slamming as they run down to the corner to see all the 'forbidden' blood and guts...

Part of the allure is that viewers associate themselves with the actors and see themselves in the role on the screen... roles that they can only wish they could experience in their own lives.... for sure a cheap and vicarious thrill... the delusion that a good looking gal would do "that" for them... the fulfillment of their fantasies...

But for the most part, I think the main reason for the fascination is two-fold: (1) sex has been pretty much demonized (for lack of a better word) by just about every church denomination I can think of, heaping tons of shame and guilt and eternal damnation and hells-fire on anyone who even thinks about sex. This sets people up for all sorts of crazy-making behavior. Everyone is a sexual being. Everyone. It's the one thing we all have in common. Then, religion keeps trying to beat it out of you...or at least beat 10% of your income out of you so you can be forgiven for all this sexual behavior and still get into heaven. It's the perfect scam...tell us the very soul we possess, as sexual beings, is perverse and ugly and sinful...then milk us for donations so we can feel 'forgiven' and all is well. (2) The internet has made it so easy now to hide this indulgence from public view...no more sneaking into the dirty book store for a nasty magazine or video, we can download all we want in the privacy of our homes, and the reverend isn't sitting outside the bookstore to see you go in any more...... So millions of suckers pay dearly on both ends... to get the materials in the first place, and then to buy their salvation afterwards...

And I thought the mafia had a racket going....

A large number of peoples' livelihoods in Southern California depend on the porn industry. It has become a pillar of the SoCal economy. Want those jobs to be "offshored" as well?

As for the product itself, it's usually incredibly boring. Blaming social ills on it is giving it too much credit. Porn films are more likely to put somebody to sleep than destroy their life.

Well it depends on whether you ask male or female, female is going to go with the negative issues, the male he's going to go the positive side.

95% of all guys are going to say nothing wrong with it, but you can't lump all porn into just 1 category, playboy is porn & so is some of the really raunchy stuff but there's a difference between one and the others, also were does one draw the line on what is or is not porn.

the above quote would not apply to the mentally healthy, if so then darn near every male out there would be guilty of all of the above.

now those that the above would apply to i would assume are allready mentally unstable and the porn could have added to there instability & problems, but who is to say that those issues would not have happened even w/o porn, could drugs or alcohol have played a part in it & not actually the porn.

sexual interest i'll call it is normal behavior, sexual obsession is not.

you ask any mentally stable guy if he has ever looked at porn & he's going to say well sure, then ask if it has ever caused any problems in his life, answers going to be no.

If porn takes over someones life or ruins it they're just flat out 1 sick puppy.

If someone really wants to come down on something come down on drugs & alcohol, that is what's actually ruining peoples lives, men, women, children, even newborn babies.
