then obama's slogan should've been "COSMETIC CHANGE" not "CHANGE"

Not a cosmetic change. Damn good change. Cosmetic means nothing will really change. Closing it makes all the difference.

closing it makes absolutely no difference. you might buy the spin, i don't. it's just a prison. what happens to the detainees is the real question? if we're just going to continue to detain without charge then there is no difference in policy!

Why should we move people who even "might" be a threat to our country INTO our country. Leave them where they are UNTIL we sort them out..How's that for an idea?
Sheeesh...
Might as well bomb ourselves, that's what their gunna do to us if they escape within our country anyhow..

Torture is happening in Gitmo. Torturing innocent or guilty prisoners is against the laws of the UN. Moving them off an island = accountability for those torturers who are committing these heinous crimes. This isn't a 'liberal' cause. It's a humanitarian cause. Prove them guilty and have them suffer the consequences of the law. Torturing them until they'll confess to anything to make the torture stop is not an admission of guilt.

Prisoners in Alaska (or anywhere in the USA)who have not gone to trial have attorneys, have visitation rights, can write letters, make phone calls. The prisoners in Gitmo have none of these rights of the 'innocent until proven guilty'.

unfortunately, the assumption of innocence is one of the pillars of our free society. if we want to torture and detain without charge, we are no different to our enemy. in fact, we're worse than our enemy because we're hypocrites!
freedom isn't perfect but we either accept that occassionally there will be problems, or we ram chips in everyones arms and give carte blanche to our politicians and police to do what they want.
you might think that my scenario is a bit extreme, but the journey of a thousand unjust laws starts with the first step: patriot act, real id, tarp, loss of habeas corpus, blah blah blah

thank you for answering my question. i still feel this is merely a cosmetic change but time will tell.

You all do realized the John McCain said he was going to close Gitmo as well. It isnt a Republic vs Democrat issue. In fact, I think most of the candidates said they would close Gitmo.

Thought you knew the facts - the torture, the decisions that have been made as to what they will do to the prisoners. Unless you know your facts, as I thought you might have and present no good argument for keeping Guantanamo open, it's useless to talk to you.
