It would be perfectly legal for a private school to say "whites only" and there are some that do just that even today.

It is legal for a private school to do so just as it is legal for a pirvate club to say No Blacks or Jews Allowed. Such things are common in parts of the country like Mississippi.

Have you never heard of Bob Jones University? While they did not overtly say No Blacks they had a rule against "race mixing" on campus and lost their non exempt tax status for several years. Of course the racist Republicans have always visited this campus and supported its no race mixing policies as do many in the white trash community.
