While funds for any mass transit project are a good thing, I must say I'm amused at the notion of a transit line between Los Angeles and Las Vegas. It will certainly facilitate the commute between those two cities, making it much, much easier for people to flush their money down the toilet in casinos. Mass transit to help spur gambling? I would've thought that a high-speed transit line between Los Angeles and, say, Phoenix might have been more practical.

Airlines should haul people who are going more than 800 miles or so. Anything under that should be by high speed electric rail. This will save oil for real needs.

It may go Vegas to Phoenix on the next leg. It also needs to go San Diego to San Fransisco.
It is badly needed. It will serve as the first leg of an eventual nationwide system of fast efficient rail service for people and for freight.
I disagree with you here, I think that some defense could be made for regional types of systems, but not a national network as you propose.
Rather, I think they need to develop better synfuel products, and believe they are more of a practical answer to your issue.
