I don't drink Jack Daniels or any alcohol and I quit smoking cigarettes, aside from driving American cars, what else can we buy American?
Have you ever watched that show "Made in America" hosted by John Ratzenberger. He visits companies all over the US (Zippo lighters, Louisville Sluggers), etc. Plus, here's another link:
I rented a Chevy Cobalt back in 2005 for 2 days. While I had it I was inspecting it carefully for fit and finish. All over, even the rear compartment and in every corner I could find. I was very impressed. Everything seemed to fit together fine. I couldn't see any gaps or rough edges.
I think it is too general a term to claim that "European cars have better fit and finish than American cars." My '95 Lincoln Town Car also has very good fit and finish. Even though it's 14 years old now, the interior looks new regarding fit and finish. Everything is solid- door panels, dashboard, etc.
As for material quality, many European cars have just as much plastic in the interior as American cars. I suppose the plastic is "better quality" on Euro cars.
And back to reliability... "superior" fit and finish isn't very useful if a car is always having problems!
My husband says next car he buys will be a Ford as they weren't begging for a hand out. momojojo thanks for posting that link.
