I though this was an article from The Onion when I first saw it. But apparently President Obama actually said the things it quotes here... and even made a highly unusual, special phone call to reporters just for the purpose.
Was he tired when he said these things too?
What on Earth is going on with this guy?
Can you imagine the media reaction if George W. Bush had tried to duck responsibility in this way?
President Obama was so concerned that he had appeared to dismiss a question from New York Times reporters about whether he was a socialist that he called the newspaper from the Oval Office to clarify his policies.
"It was hard for me to believe that you were entirely serious about that socialist question," he told reporters, who had interviewed the president aboard Air Force One on Friday.
Opening the unusual presidential call to reporters by saying that there was "just one thing I was thinking about as I was getting on the copter," he said it wasn't he who started the federal government's intervention into the nation's financial system.
"I did think it might be useful to point out that it wasn’t under me that we started buying a bunch of shares of banks. It wasn’t on my watch. And it wasn’t on my watch that we passed a massive new entitlement -– the prescription drug plan -- without a source of funding."
The New York Times asked, "So whose watch are we talking about here?" but Obama wouldn't name names.
(snip)
The phone call came after the president was asked aboard his plane: "Are you a socialist as some people have suggested?"
He was clear in his first answer: "You know, let’s take a look at the budget – the answer would be no."
"Is there anything wrong with saying, 'Yes'?" a Times reporter pressed.
"Let’s just take a look at what we’ve done," Obama said, ticking off efforts his administration has made to stabilize the economy. But he acknowledged that, as he told Joe the Plumber, he plans to try to spread the wealth around.
I'm not getting your point. The prescription drug plan was passed by a Republican congress and signed by president Bush. The bank bailout was signed by Bush as well.
If you're not a supporter of the President, you're already completely convinced that he is a socialist no matter what he says. If you're a supporter, you don't care that he is a socialist. I think the President should just say "Yes, I'm a socialist." and move on.

You're abusing the word 'socialist'. What we have in America is a "welfare state" not socialism. Please look it up.
Just crack the code: Take whatever O man says and scratch it because he never meant it in the first place. He means just the opposite. It's like a code within a code. Like how he promised he would go line by line to rid bills of wasteful spending, knock out pork barrel projects, and provide a 5 day public review. Unless, of course, the bill is just in answer to a "crisis," or it's just last year's business (a bill that Dems crafted--I mean the bills DO start in the House--Pelosi--they have the majority and Bush refused to sign it, which is why it's leftover business). O man has the power to veto the Omnibus bill, but he won't because he keeps throwing it on last year's business. What's so funny about that is that he wanted to change the way business in DC is done, but it's more of the same. And if Bush (since we're blaming the Omnibus on him) and his policies jacked stuff up so much, then why in the heck is he SIGNING a bill left over from the previous adiminstration in the first place? Isn't that the last thing you'd want to do? Wouldn't you want to distance yourself from that instead of rubber stamping it? Well---not if you want to continue to have a scapegoat.

I don't disagree with you (except for the silly "code" part), but the adminstration does have a point, and you do as well. I'm torn on the issue myself. Obama could do as you suggest, but leaving himself out of legislation that was debated and crafted last year is certainly reasonable.
i wonder how many people here will agree me thinking this is a ridiculous and uninformed post.
There are items that the republicans can debate about Obama- but being honest, showing integrity and accountability.
Debate the new support for stem-cell research if you need a topic - but to continue to state Obama is a socialist and blame him for 8 + (notice the plus) years without proper regulations on banks and Wall street is just absurd and not worth debating.
