Yeah, a bunch of peasants armed with handguns are really going to do a lot of damage to multi-billion dollar cartel guerrillas armed with military grade weapons, trained by members of the army.

I do not doubt at all that a lot of the cartel weapons originate in the U.S. But the majority of them find their way to the cartels by way of the U.S. government providing them to the Mexican government which manages to lose track of them.
