Hardline Saudi clerics urge TV ban on women, music (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090322/ap_on_re_mi_ea/ml_saudi_hardline_clerics - broken link)

What the HELL?

"RIYADH, Saudi Arabia – A group of Saudi clerics urged the kingdom's new information minister on Sunday to ban women from appearing on TV or in newspapers and magazines, making clear that the country's hardline religious establishment is skeptical of a new push toward moderation."

As a woman, I dont even know what to say to this!

Perhaps if they keep hiding their women -- under veils, in the home, now not even to be seen in magazines or tv -- perhaps then it will be easier to deny women 'human' status at all.

Or that they even exist

You cannot expect more from a butt backwards nation that still holds weekly public executions. Yet when the Saudi Royals visit western nations, they strip off the Arab garb and party like animals. The pinacle of hypocrisy.

Some conservatives in the States are only just a little bit more progressive than them.

I don't think anyone could ever accuse me of being 'soft' on christian fundementalism -- but lets be honest here.
The Saudis take religous fundementalism to a whole new (and disgusting, disturbing, and evil) level. Most christian fundementalists wouldn't go that far even if they could.
Of course, there are always exceptions...

Agreed, camping! I dont think fundamental Christians would do this either. I think it is mostly Arabic countries. Very backwards and wrong. Who do these people think they are? I dont think it is ok to censor women at all. But it happens everywhere. We women gotta stick together. If I ever have daughters, I will teach them to stand up for themselves. They will be so brave and strong that men would shake.

These people like to hide their disgust over women by trying to sell us the story that they actually "respect" women & because of that "respect", THAT is why they want their women covered, hidden in the home, not allowed to drive, cannot leave the home w/out an escort, etc. etc. Respect my ass, it's all BS.

I am with you -- as devoutly religious as these saudi women may be, they are being erased from their own society. When that happens, how easy will it be to abuse them? Kill them? Who is to even say that they existed in the first place?
Very disturbing.
And, I have to admit (and it pains me to) but while I would have no problem for my daughters to marry a man of any race, or of any religion (or lack thereof), or to marry another woman I would have grave concerns if they would marry a muslim immigrant from saudi, afghanistan, or a few other countries. I don't know that I could trust a man with my daughter who had been raised in such a culture that devalued women to this extent.
