According to whom?

Letting poisonous chemicals leech into the groundwater for the benefit of the big copper miners then allowing the rest of the country to try to clean it up is a perfect example of this.
Yes this happened as it happened in many, many other states and still does in Nevada. Money buys influence especially in rural areas.

Couple that with clear cutting of old growth which allows some of the huge forest fires, and the US Forest Service's "protect buildings first" means that the forests have to burn while an ENTIRE YEAR'S BUDGET is spent to save the (4th, 5th or 6th) homes of the wealthy.
Here's where you go off the rails.
After living through several real bad fire seasons (less than 1 mile from a few of 'em) what I've noticed the biggest complaint is the "let it burn until it's too late" policy. Clear cutting is a false flag and usually used by earthfirsters, actually lack of management of the forest allowing way too much tinder on the forest floor, dead standing timber (beetle kills) etc is causing these extremely hot fires. An example: Last year a fire was spotted by a logging company and they called the USFS, reported the fire and offered to send their crew over to put it out while it was small, probably a few hour job. They were told "we're aware of it and we'll send someone out". By the time they got around to it was out of control and turned into major disaster. Then there's the rancher who spotted a fire while on a dozer, called it in and said "I'm going to take the dozer over and start putting it out" and was told "If you do you'll be arrested/cited by the EPA for driving a dozer across a creek without a permit". The fire blew up into one of the bigger ones in the state.
Yes we've had/have a problem with the rich and wannabe rich immigrating here and building McMansions and raising the cost of land and existing houses to the point locals can't afford them and local governments raising taxes so high that those people can't afford to live in their own cities anymore (like Whitefish for example). The thing is like it or not (for now) it's still a free country.

For a good discussion of Montana and its current standing I'd suggest reading "Collapse", can't remember the author right now, same guy that wrote "Guns, Germs and Steel".

Or you can talk to people who live here if you visit and get it first hand with no spin.

Exactly right! I love how these D.C. types are under the illusion no one can exist without them. Yep, if D.C. were wiped off the map I doubt anyone would really notice except the loss of some good museums.

Lol, sure, why not. I prefer a good saddle horse for general transport but one would need a wagon to haul stuff
