Every time Detroit (big three) signed an agreement with the UAW...they cut their own inevitable throats.

There was NO WAY the big three would be able to survive the increased costs of the labor and pension funds. It was a pyramid that waited to collapse. You can only pass on the increase costs so far on the price of the car/truck from the assembly line before sales will slump as it has shown today.

The cemetary has three large plots vacant and available.

Isn't it amazing which posters here are defending Obama's decision to have GM's CEO step down. I have to wonder why none of the other businesses receiving a government bailout has had their leaders step down? Were the heads of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac asked to step down? Were the heads of AIG asked to step down? When the newspaper industry goes to the Federal Government for a handout, will their leaders be asked to step down? What's sad about GM's CEO being asked to step down is he led GM through a great deal of product improvement. Though their products didn't improve as fast as many would have liked, they did improve. It's also during his time as CEO that GM began development on an electric powered vehicle called the Volt. It's slated to go on sale sometime in 2011. If it's production model works as promised then it's fuel economy will put the Prius to shame. It was also during his time that Cadillac began it's regrowth. Many agree that GM's many divisions made them redundant with platform sharing across divisions. Drop GMC, Pontiac, Saturn, Hummer, and Saab. They've already committed themselves to Chevrolet, Buick, and Cadillac. The 2010 Buick Lacross is a very good looking car inside and out. Chevy needs a better entry level car to replace the Aveo, produced by Korean company Daewoo. The Cobalt is being replace with the Cruze which shares it's body and suspension with the Volt. The current Malibu is a hit. The Impala needs to be replaced but they're not sure or not saying with what or even if they will replace it. The Corvette isn't going anywhere. Buick is down to 2 cars and one of the two is based upon the Caddy DTS, an old and outdated platform. The current Lacross is the same as the Impala and Grand Prix. Much of Saturn's vehicles come from GM's European Opel division. Good cars, bad choice of GM American division. The upcoming LaCross comes from Opel. No word yet on if any other Opel cars will be going through Buick. Hummer was a stupid move for GM. Saab and Daewoo were a gamble that didn't pay off. Ford gambled with Volvo, Mazda, Jaguar, and Land Rover. They benefited from Volvo and Mazda but have dropped Jaguar and Land Rover. Volvo gave Ford the new Taurus from the S80. Mazda gave Ford the Fusion, Milan, and MKS from the Mazda 6. Chrysler was with Mercedes and got the 300 and Charger from Mercedes leftovers. Mercedes left the partnership. Chrysler is still partnered with Mitsubishi, both of which aren't doing too well. Without the Lancer, Mitsubishi might as well shut down for good.

Good, he sucked at his job and it apparently took the gov't to force free market economics to work. Looking forward to conservatives dipping into new levels of insanity and no longer using paragraphs.

What of the Board of Directors at GM???

Since when does a President tell a company CEO to quit?

Sickening how fast this country is going down the tubes.

For those of you who believe that "It was best for the country that he step down, so that makes it OK for govt to tell him to leave" is an acceptable excuse, see the first sentence in this post.

Let's see... The Obama admin chose to decide which comapnies could fail and which couldn't, then made it so by doling out a trillion or more US dollars to the lucky ones.

Then they decided to control the salaries of some of the employees. Not many... but how long will that limit be in place?

Now they've decided to take the responsibility of deciding who can work where. Again, they haven't applied it to many... yet.

Remind me again why I should NOT think we are careening headlong into a socialistic form of government?

When you ignore the limits impose on the American government by the Constitution, you wind up with a government that has NO limits. We're not there yet... but the light at the end of the tunnel, is looking more and more like an approaching train. An EXPRESS train.

The White House confirms Wagoner is leaving at the government's behest.

The Obama administration asked Rick Wagoner, the chairman and CEO of General Motors, to step down and he agreed, a White House official said.

What's even worse is now the government can tell any business it likes what they want it to do and if they refuse the government can "bailout" their competition. How is this not the most sinister administration we have ever had? I'm afraid we've already gone over the edge.

What would you rather do? Would you be fine with the automobile industry collapsing?

I'd say the President.. acting as the person hired by We the People.. is NOT out of bounds here. Especially considering that the current leadership has not done so well in managing the company.

If they need to ask for money.. they need to meet the terms. If they don't want to meet the terms.. then they don't have to take the money..

Not too difficult of a concept..

Doesn't it seem foolish to throw money at/too a company that doesnt implement severe change to turn it around??
It was a loan..not a gun for hire. You want to go to the bank for a loan and the bank tell you which house to buy and for how much ?

The gov't should have called in their loan..not fire him. The government has stepped out of bounds here. No one gave the White House stock.
No one gave YOU voting rights for GM.

Some of you people are like the Romans when they fed the Christians to the lions..you want blood and Obama gave it to you...the head of GM's CEO on a platter. Want more ? Which CEO should Obama fire next ?

GM is not the auto industry. There's Ford and Toyota and Honda who all seem to be doing a heck of a lot better. Let GM fall..they should have never gave them a penny of government money. GM has been bleeding green for years; it was just a matter of time before the credit ran out.
