quote=Hoarfrost;8142864If by "Socialism" you mean a government that actually gives incentives for people to drive fuel efficient vehicles rather than gas guzzling monstrosities(*Cough* America *Cough*), then that's some fine socialism there.
The government should never use taxpayer money to try to engineer the behavior of it's citizens.
Conversely, it should never levy taxes to try to engineer the behavior of it's citizens.
The only way a government should engineer behavior is through laws that have gone through all the proper channels (the legislature) in order to be enacted.

I agree, no tax incentives to have children.
All political and educational pursuits in the country are to engineer the behavior of its citizenry.

Pragmatically speaking, I don't see how one could have a problem with giving taxpayer money back to taxpayers to pump back into the economy on something that benefits everyone. You're going to have to tell me who exactly loses in the case of these European countries in this program.

Pragmatism should trump dogma, all the time.

The plan has exceeded expectations. Car sales are now running at an annual rate of more than 13 million because of the subsidies, according to Stuart Pearson of Credit Suisse, well above the 11 million level where they started the year.
So apparently, it's smarter than anything America has figured out to do to stop the hemorrhaging of our car industry.

A government powerful enough to give you anything you want, can take anything it wants from you.

Completely short-sighted even "fringe" point of view. Ever heard of tax incentives? Ever heard of tax credits? Ever heard of the notion that the marketplace doesn't always do things right, especially in relation to valuing future resources. You must also think it's a bad idea to get lead out of paint and highly polluting cars off the roads. There's nothing here to discuss.

The sociaaalist ways of the past president may allow you to buy an American car. Face it without the help of gov, you might have seen all our car companies fold... that is far more tragic than being socialist. If you worked for one of those companies you may think the same,

"Socialism" in Europe helps you buy a new car

Soon Socialism in the U.S. is also going to help Europeans by a new car.

That's a nice little maxim that seems like it could even be plausible, but it isn't.
