BAGHDAD - Cheered wildly by U.S. troops, President Barack Obama flew unannounced into Iraq on Tuesday and promptly declared it is time for Iraqis "take responsibility for their country" after America's commitment of six years and thousands of lives.

"You have given Iraq the opportunity to stand on its own as a democratic country," the president said as he made a brief inspection of a war he opposed as candidate and now vows to end as commander in chief. "That is an extraordinary achievement."

A total of 4,266 U.S. troops have lost their lives in Iraq since March 2003, and Obama said American forces had "performed brilliantly ... under enormous strain."

This thread will get no attention. It does not fit the agenda of the liberal do-gooders who would love for all of us to think that Iraq was a colossal failure.

They know who they are. They must be writhing in pain right now knowing that the Annointed One would lay the big smack down on the nay-sayers that got him elected. We all know this war brought democracy and freedom to an oppressed people. Even Obama can't deny it.

Gee, what do you think has been happening for the last 2 years?

World Tribune —Iraq has taken charge in 13 of 18 provinces

Slowly, but surely, they have taken back control of 13 of 18 provinces by Nov of 2008 - all under bush's watch and policy.

It could even be more by now.

You are trippin'n!

First, Iraq is now and always be a colossal failure.

No weapons of mass destruction.

No threat to U.S or U.S interest.

The installation of a pro-Iranian government.

Increasing Iran's dominance in the region.

By the way, Obama's statement is the direct antithesis of Bush and McCain's policies.

Where did you get that idea? We've been training them since the beginning, and they've taken over much of the responsibility. That was always the "exit strategy" that everyone kept requesting. It has worked.

This is precisely their agenda, wrapping up this mess as quickly and responsibly as possible. For all the talk about individual personal responsibility from conservatives here, there sure as heck isn't a whole lot of that sentiment being applied to the people as a whole in Iraq. So it's about time we do.

Where did I get this idea?

Perhaps Bush and McCain's insistence that they would decide when Iraq was ready by insisting that the U.S. remain in Iraq for the interminable future. Do you recall this pet phrase;

"When the Iraqis stand up, we'll stand down"

That is quite a bit different from.

"It's time for the Iraqis to take responsibility!"

Funny, I could have sworn by another thread that the troops were cold toward Obama.
