You know the type. And they're not limited to any given political party or cause:

The people who won't be friends with somebody because of different political beliefs.

The people who drag politics into every conversation, no matter how non-related and benign the original subject matter is.

The people who think that they, and only they, are the guardians of truth.

The people who gleefully point out the glaring shortcomings of the opposition candidate while roundly ignoring the flaws of their own.

I mean, are they just willful, inflexible, sanctimonious halfwits? And what can we do about them?

Besides hoping that they don't breed, nothing.
I do see it in both parties though....and really, in just about equal numbers.

The problem is not only the fanatics who would vote the party line even if satan were the party's candidate. Even worse are the elected senators and representatives who vote as they are told to vote by the party leader. This is not the way the government was intended to work; but you see it in action every time there is a vote taken in the Senate or the House. There are few who dare to not vote as told because they know they will lose any stature, such as committee membership as well as campaign finance assistance from the party. What we have are a bunch of high paid robots who don't bother reading and trying to understand what they are voting on; they just vote yes or no as told. I am not intending to paint all of the members of congress with the same broad brush; there are some who will stand on their own two feet and think about what is best for their constituents as well as the country as a whole and vote accordingly; but there are not enough of them to make a difference, YET!

A six and a half year old thread resurrected by a one post newbie.

Lot of that going around lately, it seems.
