I certainly did. The editorial "interpretation" you cite sidesteps entirely the fact that red states do tend to "bring home the bacon, i.e., pork" more than blue states, both on a purely income-related basis "and" a per person basis.

Well, it's true that those who make the most also pay the most taxes, and receive the less help form the Federal Government. The super-rich pay the bulk of the Federal taxes, too, and receive the less Welfare, Medicare, etc.

But in the case of Alaska, which has such a huge Federal stronghold, a great portion of the money coming is not for the population, but for the Federal Government itself. A great portion of the Alaska workforce is Federal. Also, while Alaska oil workers may not be paying taxes because of the oil extracted form the ground, the Federal Government is directly making a lot of money from every barrel of oil extracted from the ground in Alaska. Out of every barrel of oil extracted, a portion of money goes directly to the Fed. Government, another to the State, and so forth, but this isn't income tax. Some of the largest gold mining operations in the nation take place in Alaska, and this money the Federal Government receives isn't an income tax received from the miners, but from the production of gold.

Such data can be easily manipulated or misused, since no clear explanations are given.

Exactly..the blue states pay the most taxes (for whatever reason) yet the red states are the ones complaining the most? Whatever your political beliefs, you have to admit the irony of it.

Can you imagine the backlash and posts in this forum if it were the blue states that were being subsidized by the red states?

Same thing is happening in the Gulf of Mexico oil rigs off the coast of Louisiana, Texas, and Mississippi.

They pay the most income taxes because they (the tax payers) earn the most money, or because there are a lot of people, each paying taxes. But the moneys going into the Federal coffers aren't all from income taxes as I explained above. The production and sell of oil and minerals bring a huge amount of cash to the Government, and it's the Federal Government controlling such activities. The States by themselves are not allowed to control oil and mining production.

Yes and those same states also have the most needs, yet receive the less per dollar. They may have the most wealth, but they also have the highest population and therefore "should" need more than the lower population states as more infrastructure is in the blue states...Yet the red states get more in return with less needs and cry the most...

I'd love to see the above chart exclude federal spending on federal land and military. They should include the money the federal government receives via oil drilling leases and mineral rights. It seems it only counts federal tax money and not leases and fees and other things.

You conveniently leave out the Democratic swamp of DC that puts all the red states to shame.

$5.55 comapred to the $2.03 of the worst red state. But hey don't let facts get in the way.

NM national labs are the crown jewels in the nation's nuclear program. NM air bases maintain and train some of the best pilots and the world.

Population: 1.8 million.

Considering that the Pentagon with its enormous expenditures is located in Washington D.C., that ratio should not be surprising. Washington D.C. actually has a relatively small population of 600,000. The only "state" with a smaller population is Wyoming.
