Absolutely.

Unless he had evil intentions of course. That remains to be seen. It may well be the whole incident is just a silly misundersanding.

If the gun was in checked baggage, then obviously he had no intention of using it during the flights.

Either way, I think the authorities took the appropriate measures here. If he is innocent of any wrongdoing then so much the better. He will walk away a free man. I will not call this Marine an extremist or anything else unless he is proven guilty.

This is what I read (below), but it may be too early to believe anything at this point.

US Marine arrested at Logan - Local News Updates - The Boston Globe
Reed was charged with possession of an infernal machine and possession of a concealed weapon in a secure area of an airport.
He put the gun and other items in his checked baggage in Las Vegas.
Somehow it was missed there(great security) and then in Boston was mistakenly sent to the baggage carousel which required it to go BACK through security...where the items were found.

The problem is he IS guilty according to the law and I doubt he will be given any leniency...

really?

then all the US marshals should be arrested as well, plus all the federal employees arrested too, as they are all allowed to carry onto a plane.

I am more in favor of giving a 30% ticket reduction for all those wanting to carry onto a plane.

The list of what they found doesn't sound like bomb-making materials to me. Nothing illegal to own. Typical media sensationalism. I remember lots of stories about "grenade making materials" or such and it turns out someone had some blackpowder and maybe some cannon fuses. People often forget things or make stupid mistakes. How many people have brought small knives or such with them on a flight to have them confiscated? Unless there's more evidence found that he was going to do something I don't think he should be charged with anything.

Vegas has spotty security for sure. An unspent Mosin Nagant round (7.62x54R, a big one) made it through the CARRY ON security screening as I was coming back from a personal trip. At the gate, after I realized my serious error reaching in for my laptop headphones, I promptly threw the round in the garbage before boarding the plane.

Like I already told you twin brother (see below). Are you guys looking for arguments just for the heck of it?

================================================== ===
Obviously if the weapons are declared, and in your checked in luggage, there is no issue. And I don't have an issues with air marshalls either.

Don't try to take my words out of the context. You know what I meant. Obviously I was talking about guns and/or bombs on people in places where they are not supposed to be carrying them.
