Women serve an increasingly expanded role in our military and are on the front lines in Iraq. They are brave, smart, strong.. and sexually abused. The percentages are staggering! We cannot turn a blind-eye to what these women (and often teenagers) are facing. How can we better protect them? These could be our daughters....
"Between 2006 and 2008, some 40 women who served in the Iraq War spoke to me of their experiences at war. Twenty-eight of them had been sexually harassed, assaulted or raped while serving.
They were not exceptions. According to several studies of the US military funded by the Department of Veteran Affairs, 30% of military women are raped while serving, 71% are sexually assaulted, and 90% are sexually harassed.
The Department of Defense acknowledges the problem, estimating in its 2009 annual report on sexual assault (issued last month) that some 90% of military sexual assaults are never reported."
I'll get flamed for this, but who cares. Women wanted equality, and they rightfully got it through the women's lib movement. Ok, no problem. Women are rightfully allowed to serve in the military. Ok, no problem.
Sexual offenses are in no way, shape, or form acceptable, but since when did it make sense to have 100,000 men and a few women in a confined space together? I don't condone any of the abuse at all, but does it really surprise anyone?
It happens in neighborhoods all across America. Singling out the military is just another liberal wuss-fest.
You're letting your own self-serving biases about the war in Iraq cloud your judgement of your child's potential willingness to serve his/her country.

If my son or daughter joined the military it would be hard to continue the relationship at all, frankly.
As to the original post, I fail to see how someone would be concerned about their daughter possibly being sexually abused, but not possibly shot in the head, blown to bits, burned alive, etc. Guess it just underlines this society's anti-sexual obsession, but it's nothing I can identify with.

Awesome. Just the motherly/fatherly support our kids need. Who needs enemies when you can't even rely on mom or dad to support you in doing something patriotic? You my friend, are a shame to parenting world. Thank God I don't know you. I pray that not many people do. Worthless.

I want to raise my kids to be moral, not patriotic. Joining the military is no different than joining the Mafia.

Because I was born here, and that's all the reason I need. If I do leave someday, it will be at my own convenience, not to please a bunch of amoral hillbillies.

Meanwhile I do not agree with you, I respect that you would not want your kids in the military.
If my daughter (If I have a daughter ever)went into the military, I would be sad but accept it.
