Last time I checked, there was nothing wrong with wanting nice things. Things better than what you currently have. My parents worked hard to give me a better life than had.....money for college, a nicer car, better clothes. Nothing wrong with that.
As for "what good has she done"? She worked her *ss off to better her and her kids life.....she didn't get lazy and depend on the government for welfare as a good chunk of Americans do. She showed personal responsibility.

So she wanted nice things. So what? Does that make her a capatilistic pig? Or does that make her human? Perhaps that makes her a mother that wants to be able to provide a safe and non poverty stricken environment for her children. Perhaps she wanted a pool so that she and her children could enjoy 'quality time' together. Why do you automatically assume it is about status symbols?
I do believe someone is projecting..

Because she did not say.... "I wanted to give my children a safe, secure, happy life". No she said.... "I met people who had SWIMMING POOLS, and I wanted that too".

Whatever. She discredited herself the moment she said she didn't want to "make this political" yet rattled on about secession and the other garden-variety talking points like a predictably-timed, well-oiled republican.

A couple posters wondered how people of different income brackets voted. Made me curious so did a quick look on the net but did not find the demographics.
Did find something interesting in the search:
* In 2006 (last census data), 220 million Americans were eligible to vote
* Of these, 89 million (40 %) paid no income taxes.
* The Tax Policy Center says the number of eligble voters who don't pay taxes will increase to 49 %
when Obama's cash credits remove 18 million more voters from the tax rolls.
* Another 24 million taxpayers (11 %) will pay less than 5 % of their income and less than $1,000 annually.
* 3 in 5 voters will pay little to nothing under Obama's plan and will gain when taxes rise on the 40 % who already pay 95 % of income tax revenues.
* 5 % earn more than $250,000 and already pay 60 % of the federal income tax bill
This information can be found by reading through the article at http://www.aei.org/publications/pubID.28890/pub_detail.asp dated Nov. 4, 2008. Info could also be found at the Census Bureau website or the Tax Policy Center website
I don't know what income bracket voted for Obama, one may say conclusions can be made based on these facts but can't say if those conclusions would be correct.

Again, so what?
Are you trying to say that to want a swimming pool makes one unacceptably greedy?
Or are you saying that only certain people should be allowed to have swimming pools?
Perhaps you are trying to say that people should not be allowed to leave the socio-economic niche into which they were born?
So do tell.....are you a classist, a snob or a racist?

Branson,
Be thankful you are not paying her mortgage! It was the dream she needed to change her life and get her off the welfare rolls. Everybody needs a dream before they can achieve anything!

My guess is that the "swimming pool" was more of a symbol to her rather then just "oh boy, I want a pool". It was a symbol to set a goal, work hard toward that goal, and here in America - your dreams can come true.

Does it matter what it is what motivates a person to get a better life as long is it is something legal?
Does it matter if she looks up to people who have a pool and wanted that for herself and her child...no where did she say it was only mend for her not for her child!
Does it matter if people look at other succesful people instead of looking at a homeless person and saying they rather become a succesful person with a car, yard or pool...or do you rather had her be another person on welfare and asking for a bailout...I guess we know what you would choose!
