I think they should be. Or I don't see the purpose anymore. In Montreal (this has happened quite a few times up there recently) the fans booed the Star Spangled Banner. Of course, in retaliation, the Boston fans (hopefully I'm wrong) will return the favor if the series between the Canadiens and Bruins goes 5 games.
Maybe this tradition should not be banned from sports because of a few yahoos, but I just think it would solve a problem. It just flammes "country wars" that don't need to go on and on top of that 1/2 the players, particulary in baseball and hockey with the higher number of non north americans on the rosters, could not care less about it anyway, judging by their behavior.
Another reason why it's gone too far (or maybe) is the incident at Yankee Stadium, where some guy was roughed up by cops, for walking away from his seat to use the restroom, during God Bless America.
Your thoughts, even though I can see this flaming into a "liberals are unpatriotic" thread.

I've never been clear as to why national anthems are played before sporting events to begin with.

Although I make the following exception:

YouTube - Marvin Gaye sings American National Anthem

I heard this rendition for the first time a few years ago. Blew me away.

Let's ban stupidity instead!

I'd start with the cops roughing up a fan if that's indeed what happened.

it's just a tradition. they should not be required to do it, but they shouldn't ban it.

I think the star spangled banner before the game is just fine. At some events, though, the shows of patriotism/nationalism just become a bit "too much." For example, after 9/11, the star spangled banner wasn't enough anymore. "God Bless America" was added to the repertoire at many sporting events for awhile. They still do it at Yankee Stadium, at every game during the 7th inning stretch. There's a "No Bathrooms" rule, meaning if you go to the bathroom during "God Bless America" you're thrown out of the stadium. It's stupid.

When I go to a baseball game, I like songs about peanuts and cracker jack, and "Meet the Mets." The "God Bless America" thing, the standing, the hats off, the no-bathrooms rule, etc. just make it feel so forced, so fake. It's like "the man" coming down and saying "show your patriotism OR ELSE!!!"

So here we go again...changing a tradition because of a few disrespectful idiots. Yup...somebody's itty bitty feeling got hurt....let's scream UNFAIR!!

I have been to many a sporting event and have NEVER seen any of this happen.
Basketball, baseball, football, NASCAR and even a couple of hocky games.
I don't believe that a guy was roughed up for that reason. That's probably just HIS version of the story. I've seen people move about all the time with no harrassment from anybody...a few glares maybe but that's it.

Find something important to be irate about. It stuff like this that makes me worry about the voters in this country.

Maybe you should go in front of the fans at one of these events and propose your idea.

Let's see if you can make it out of there in one piece.

You predicted someone would say it - let me oblige:

Liberals Are Unpatriotic.

I might add idiotic as well for even considering such a preposterous idea.

Why don't you move to Canada so you can boo us?

Pure idiocy.
