Interesting that the results of your poll are so lopsided. Hate crime laws appear to be unpopular across the political spectrum. I assumed that it was mostly conservatives who were against hate crime legislation.

Glad you posted this poll. We've learned something new.

Thanks.

It would be interesting to see a broader poll on this with a liberal/conserative or Repub/Dem breakdown.

You mean some people commit a crime against those they like??? I never heard of that.

I thought the definition of a crime was hurting someone you hate or at least care nothing about. If you kill someone you loved, like in a fit of rage, I thnk you suddenly hate the person at that moment.

Ah, yes, the "all crimes are hate crimes" mentality.

Speeding is a crime. Hateful?

Jaywalking is a crime. Hateful?

I could go on.

I'm talking about crimes that may be against one person, but that are meant to make a statement to the entire group.

EDIT: the poll answer choices should say "only if the laws ONLY protect...." for both of those choices. It'd be great if a mod would edit it....thanks.
May as well add political affiliation to Equal Employment Opportunity laws too.

Should an environmentalist who slashes the tires on a Hummer, or fire bombs a dealership, be charged under hate crimes legislation, and given a longer prison sentence? What about a liberal anti-military nut be fined more for littering in front of a military recruitment office?

I think all hate crimes legislation should be eliminated, a crime is a crime.

the word 'hate' is becoming so overused, it's pretty near lost all meaning.

just look around this board for example. you can't voice even a mild opinion without some screechazoid labeling it as 'hate.'

Just like the word "socialist". Sarah Palin used it so much, I can't even think of that word any more without hearing her voice in my head - with that unusual accent of hers.

Hate crimes laws make as much sense as jealousy crimes laws.
