Its probably the policy of the post commander being administered by the lowest command level (in this case, company). This is nothing new and its been going on for years.
To me, it's only their business to know if you're bringing the private weapon on base. If you live off base or you keep your weapon off base then it's none of their business.
That's my answer. Since it's pretty straightforward and untraceable to lie, I guess it's not really scary after all
