Yes, I see your point. The D-lites have done a great job bringing victory and honor to the party of Lincoln, Eisenhower, Goldwater, and Reagan.

What exactly are the mainstream D leadership, if not socialists and pro-communists? They've never met a red they don't love and fawn over. They never met a tax increase, a freedom-sapping government program, or a new way to make people dependent on them that they didn't like.
That's compassion? No, it is control.
you know as well as I do.. that more factors were at play in each of these elections.. whether it be social issues, fear, fiscal issues...
winning the moderates has little to do with touting rhetoric to your base.. and everything to do with tapping into the real issues of the day and demonizing your opponent with behind the scenes advisors such as Karl Rove.. the republicans have been damn good at such tactics...
Problem is the hour glass of patience has run out... republicans have not delivered on anything they've promised to moderate independents...and in the process have not delivered on anything to their base.. they've been a say one thing to one person.. say another thing to another person and do neither of the things..
examples include... abortion... they've had ample opportunity and ability to influence the ruling for their base...Yet nothing has been addressed..
They got voted in in the early part of this decade because of the fear of gay marriage.. and now we have gay marriage happening all around the country..
Moderate examples include, handling of going after the people responsible for 9-11... and balancing the budget...
so I don't understand how you can justify your belief that the republican base is good as gold and has always been?
as far as I'm concerned.. republicans don't even have their base covered let alone appealing to the moderate independent... hardlining to their base is all they got left..because they are the only people still loyal... but such action is why they are losing more and more seats in numerous recent elections

Yeah but . . maybe he's counting on a foreign-born president to enable himself as a candidate for 2012.

He'd have a good argument - that the the Constitution "gave way" to a more "progressively enlightened" America.

Schwarzenegger is leaving public life after his Governor term is up. He was totally demoralized by the GOP & has taken the Specter road into the Democratic party [only Arnold is too proud to say it out loud

So when you start seeing the moderate republicans jumping ship... it's a sad day for the party.. because the hardliners are VERY much a minority.. and are fastly becoming extremists.. atleast in a sociatal viewpoint
I was thinking the very same thing. I'm glad you said it all for me.

I voted for Arnold in '06 and I would likely do it again.

Please.

Like Karl Rove is the only manipulative Wizard of Oz in the last 20 years? That is the willful suspension of judgement and logic.

Carville, Begala, Stupidopolis (the only one to leave the Clinton administration and not suffer an unfortunate life terminating event), etc., these are all men of honor?
Rom Emanuel, who's now running Treasury and telling "the only guy in the Milky Way who's smart enough to work this out" how high to jump and when, is hardly what I would call a man of integrity.
Never mind that Timmy would be in prison for tax evasion if he weren't a favorite son and politically connected.

GWB was a moderate to left leaning democrat. He was LBJ reincarnated. He turned over the entire fed-ed budget to neo-comm Teddy Eddy Kennedy. Please do not call Great Warrior a republican, he was/is an LBJ democrat.

The Reagan base is the only difference between D and R. A Guliani or a similar D-lite is not the escape from the desert for the Republican party.

That the Rs have such nincompoops as McCain, Jethro Bush, and a couple of other non-intelligent life forms pretending to yet again re-invent the New, Improved Republican party does them no good. That Bobby Jindal has signed onto such a farce tells me he must be desperate, naive, stupid, or a sucker. NOT presidential material, certainly.

Ron Paul as president would have seen far different events than the utterly illegal and unconstitutional federal takeover of banks and industry.
If ANYONE in the private sector tried such nonsense they would be immediately busted by the FBI and prosecuted for attempting to overthrow the US government.

The Republicans had a great opportunity in 2001, as they did in 1995, and their "leadership" such as Bill Frist and Big
Denny Hastert just went the way that seems natural for almost anyone who's lived in DC for a decade or more: spend more, corrupt more, get bought by more "lobbyists" who would be known as bribers in any industry but government.

I'd rather see a Clinton as president and an oppositional Republican Congress than either party controlling both houses and the white house.

They are all corrupt and bought, with maybe 40 exceptions in congress, and neither party can be trusted to do their honest best for their legal employers, the American citizen.

Demoralized by the Republican party...or personally embarrassed because he did such a poor job (something else he wouldn't say out loud, either).

I agree with all of this 100%

Reagan was the reason I became a Republican...

Bush (both of them, but especially W), Schwarzenegger, all of California's Republican Assembly / Senate members are the reason why I officially left the Republican party. The Republican party today is indistinguishable from the Democrats IMHO.
