Here's an interested article from the LA Times that supports your thread. LA Times is a liberal paper mind you.

It doesn't exactly take a brain surgeon to figure that out..

California's an expensive state due to the high taxes.

Exactly! Arnold's attempts to balance the budget is always met with stiff opposition from the Demmies and the unions.

Ok, if you guys want to call it a red state go ahead.
I thought Obama said we are not red and blue states but the United States anyway?

The biggest single cost for people is HOUSING - and no where is that MORE TRUE than in California.

To close a projected $438 million shortfall, Mayor Gavin Newsom -- who is campaigning for the 2010 governor's race -- has proposed a "target" of 25 percent cuts to all city departments, including large reductions to health and human service programs that, combined with deep midyear spending cuts, mean the closure of some popular antipoverty programs this July 1.

That's not the cost that is driving BUSINESSES out of state. Its the taxes & regulation. It's the businesses leaving that is causing the economic distress.

California housing has been higher then the national average since the early 70's and the state boomed until the late '90's. What's changed since then? The economic drag of all the stupid lefty anti-business laws, regs taxes and fees that have finally brought down the economy here.

The Obama Administration has made clear by its recent actions that California-dreaming is not a liability, but a model in which to lead the country.
While I generally agree with your comment here, it is more than just the unions. They also cater to business special interest too, plus any environmental group. They just can't objectively state and fund their priorities, practically all of their decisions are based on avoiding offending pressure groups:

As California's legislative leaders and Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger rushed to craft a budget compromise in February, there were two key political goals.

The first: Obtain enough votes to get it through the Legislature.

The second: Keep the state's richest interest groups happy with the result.
