Wow, that is surprising. That would be analogous to the right cutting military spending.

He puts the program on hold, while increasing funding for it?

Obama 2010 budget highlights by agency (http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/n/a/2009/02/26/national/w102432S08.DTL - broken link)

Agency: NASA
2010 proposal: $18.7 billion
Change from 2009 estimate: 5.1 percent increase
Highlights: The Obama administration would continue plans to retire space shuttles in 2010 and use the savings to return astronauts to the moon by 2020.
Obama's budget proposal basically continued the Bush administration plan for space policy, but would shift more resources to monitor global warming.

Of course this was from late February so I have to wonder why the change from increased funding, to cutting funding..

True... but when program's get "reviewed" a lot of times it's because they're considering putting that program on hold.

I'm torn. One the one hand, I haven't been a big fan of NASA for some time now. It doesn't seem like we're getting that much from it anymore.

But, I wonder if they keep NASA alive because of Houston's economy. I mean, wasn't that why Bush kept it alive? It was all about Texas, jobs there had to funded!!! Yes, there are a lot of strong industries in Houston, but without NASA a lot of people would suddenly be looking for work. Ironically, a lot of people left Detroit and moved to Houston because they thought it was a good place to get a job.

Now is the perfect time to defund NASA and fold it into the Department of Defense.

I heard about this on AM Coast To Coast with George Noory. They had an "expert" on commenting about NASA, one Richard C. Hoagland. They guy does have extensive experience with NASA but is also a proponent in the theory of advance intelligent alien life on Mars, ones that possibly colonized earth.
Anyway, he supported Obama's plans to cut proposed replacement craft to replace the aging Space Shuttle saying they were impractical and only on the drawing board anyway. What he says could be true, although his "kook" factor steadily increased the more he spoke. But that's what makes Noory's show good alot of the time, it gets interesting guests.
Where he lost me was in his enthusiasm and belief that Obama would push for a manned space flight to MARS, likening him to JFK. The guy's just living in a fantasy land and has completely misread Obama. Even if Obama does spend money like 3 George Bush's, no way will he spend money on anything but social entitlement programs.
