Why would anyone give money to the surplus population?

I normally give a dollar or so. My reasoning? If that $1 gets them a McDouble or something like that from McDonalds and gives them a meal, I am happy. If they use it for something else, oh well. I would rather try to help then not.

Because you know exactly what lead to them having to do this?

I prefer to error on the side of caution. I will give the benefit of the doubt that maybe some serious s--t has been sent their way. I would much rather be wrong about giving them money than not give money and somehow find out later they were f'd in life.

It depends on my mood. LOL.

Sometimes I just tell them they can come to my house and work for me and I will pay them if they need money. They usually run away because they dont want to work.

I don't always have money, but I'm not opposed to giving money to them. However, I had to brush a guy off, he said he needed gas money to get back home, that he was a teacher at the college, etc., etc. Had no money at the time. A few days later, he comes up to me while I'm on my lunch break (2 in the morning...) and gives me the SAME story, only this time, he's more discombobulated...seeming confused, mixed up.

Running out of gas on two separate occasions within a week? Not bloody likely! If only he'd remembered who I was...

I always do, if I can.
Two trains of thought on this.
1) "Whatsoever you do unto the least of those among you"....you know the rest

2) I'd like to treat someone the way I'd like to have someone I love treated, if they found themselves in a similar, difficult situation.

I will only help people who seem legit. I gave a guy a ride to his car. He was on the other side of town and had been walking. The car has honestly broke and I paid for a tow truck and took him to his grandma's home. It took almost two hours but the guy really seemed depressed and really in need. I saw him again.. his car works now and he still lives with his grandma. He gave me $5 and said he'll eventually pay me back for the tow.

I once gave money to some truthful "beggars" and followed them to see if they lied to me. It was on Bourbon Street in New Orleans and they told half truth. They said could I give some junkies money for beans. Surely they were junkies and college students as they said. However, in watching them we found that they did, as we suspected, look up a pusher and buy some illegal substances. Many students tell you some truth and if you are dumb enough to play with them they forget what they said they would use it for.
