I wonder what the penalty for actual suicide (not attempted) is?

You are, BTW, correct that these acts are not criminalized in the US. What is still a crime is to assist someone else in committing suicide.

I think so. It is up to you if you want to live or die.

EDIT-This post is about people who are perfectly healthy and no longer want to live.
I would argue that a person who is suicidal is not "perfectly healthy" in terms of mental health.

If your perfectly healthy and are aware of what you are doing you should have the right to end your life.

Exactly....as evidenced by the fact that most who unsuccessfully attempt suicide are very pleased with the failure

NO..it should not. I don't believe it is actually ILLEGAL..

The only instance where suicide should be legal is when a person is dying of a very painful disease to which there is no hope for a cure. Then they should be allowed to die peacefully by inducing a coma..then death.. or something to that affect.

In a way, you can still be penalized for committing suicide. Not criminally, of course, but some life insurance plans will not pay out if you kill yourself. Most plans have a 2 year clause. If you kill yourself within 2 years of obtaining a new plan, the insurance company won't pay.

If you are going to commit suicide--why worry about the legality of it.? Will they follow you to the grave, and arrest you?

I don't think they should ever pay, unless we are dealing with assisted suicide for the terminally ill.

this is not a funny subject. Any healthy adult (physically) should not be contemplating suicide since it is usually external forces such as depression, a job or relationship loss that effects their emotions which is a temporary situation. These are treatable conditions.

The other part of equation is those who are terminally ill and are suffering and if they choose to end their lives we should not stop them. We put our pets to sleep when they are suffering why not let human beings choose how & when they want to go in the face of constant pain?

Yes, the idea of imprisoning dead people is absurd.
