What is a conservative?
I watch the GOP struggle with their direction, and in my mind is so easy.
1) Fiscal conservative (Cut government spending)
2) Free markets (real free markets; no incentives)
3) Social progressive (keep religion and government separate. Religion is a personal matter)
4) National security (let's keep our borders protected, bring our troops home, no more nation building crap. Reduce the spending on military, keep taxes even lower)
5) Energy independence (do whatever the heck you have to do on our soil to stop depending on foreign fuel)
.....In my opinion, America is not divided, there is just not a party with common sense. The Left tries too hard to look liberal, the GOP wants to come across as a religious organization. Ron Paul was the man, but he was too direct in his message (I mean, abolishing the IRS and the Department of Education, c'mon!).

Obamatron heuristic algorithm processing unit responds with the following output:
Democrat = liberal, Republican = conservative.

I would be considered "very liberal", but this is a respectable platform from an ideological perspective. I may have slightly different views on 1 and 2, but at least these views are coming from an understandable position.
If only you could get the rest of the conservatives all on the same page. Right now, I feel it's the 'social conservatives' who are somewhat tainting the image of the party, IMO. You just have that large religious demographic you have to deal with.

A conservative is someone who believes society is most prosperous and free, when govenment does only the things necessary to their freedom, that the private people or groups CANNOT do.

I think I'm more of a moderate libertarian, if there is such a thing. Social conservatives seems to be concern with gay marriage, abortion and stem cell research. On gay marriage, I say leave it to the states and the people living in that state. On abortion, I think the government has to be pro life, because we are talking about a human being, and I say this not from a moral platform, but from a human rights standpoint. That's why I believe the focus should be on the reduction of abortions instead of focusing on the immorality of it.

What is a conservative? The answers are clearly explained in Mark R. Levin's "Liberty And Tyranny. A conservative Manifesto." This book has been on the NYT Best Seller's list for quite a while now. This book is a good read for anybody who wants to know what conservatism and what liberalism are, and you don't have to be a Republican nor a Democrat for wanting to read it.
Being a conservative has nothing to do with being a Republican. The same can be said for being a liberal and a Democrat, since not all Democrats are liberal. Some are, some aren't, in both sides of the spectrum.
