I live in NY, where I would probably get killed for flying the flag. I honestly think it is a beautiful flag, and I love the history behind it. The symbolism, that an abusive government that punishes certain states can be thrown out, and that states have the right to secede.
So do you fly a Battle Flag, either on your vehicle (could be a bumper sticker), your house (inside or outside).
I am more interested in people who actually fly the flag, why do you do it, and where do you live. I have seen a few in PA, OH, and MANY further South, as well as a few as far west as Arizona. (the only place in the upper South where I don't see them is Northern VA, DC, and Maryland).

The Confederate flag has been hijacked by the white supremacist groups. At this point to fly it you are automatically considered to be a KKK member.
I had 7 family members die in the war between the states fighting for the Confederacy. I do not consider myself a racist when passing through Vicksburg or Gettysburg i place a confederate flag on their grave. I honor their life and times.
The flag was a symbol of state rights.

We have a Battle Flag proudly displayed in a Shadow Box in our Family Room. It dates WAY back to my families heritage in the Confederacy.
And while not a "flag" per se, we got a beach towel with the "flag" on it at a NASCAR race - my daughter, who we adopted, wanted it for the pool and beach. She is 18 and she is Black! It is so funny to see her carrying that towel on the beach - the looks are priceless

Take a look at the statues inside of the Capitol building. Several statues of Confederate generals exist.
National Statuary Hall
Consider the Albert Pike statue.
Albert Pike - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Consider the Confederate Soldier Memorial at Arlington Cemetary
Confederate Memorial At Arlington National Cemetery
And to answer your last point, like I said, you'd never get a Yankee/Liberal to admit that the hatred is propogated by a dislike for rednecks. Plenty of threads on this forum back up that assertion. Whether you personally hate rednecks, I don't know, and don't care. What I do know is that the moment a Confederate flag discussion is brought up it always seems to point to southern redneck white supremacists. I don't believe you or anyone else can deny that.

Unless they did something noteworthy for this country before or after the war, they don't belong there.
Why is his statue there? Because he was a general for the Confederacy or to honor his other endeavours? If it's to honor him for his service to the Confederacy, it shouldn't be there.
It is the only outdoor statue honoring or depicting a Confederate general in DC.
Arlington is in VA though the Cemetary is a national one. As I said, cemetary memorials honor men, not causes.

I find it very interesting that people hate the Confederacy and the Confederate Flag on the individual level, but have no problem with all the Confederate monuments in and around our nation's Capitol. It seems that your hatred is misplaced. Freedom of speech should be first and foremost - whether you like that speech or not is irrelevant. But to completely ignore monuments in Washington DC that memorialize a cause that you have complete hatred for shows the hypocrisy of your rationale.
|
Might that be because:
1) Virginia is "in an around" DC? Virginia was part of the CSA with Richmond the Capital.
2) Maryland, although loyal to the Union, was a slave state and some of the biggest battles took place there- Antietam being the most well known.
To my knowlege, there are no monuments "in Washington DC" that memorialize the Confederate cause. There may be some that memorialize reconcilliation (Georgetowns colors are an example) but that is something very different.

My point is made. Confederate monuments exist in Washington DC. Most people don't know or simply ignore that - meanwhile they exact hatred for the cause at the individuals that are excercising their free speech. I call that hypocrisy.

I see you didn't teach her much Civil Rights history in your home...
