More evidence that the Republocons really need to keep up with technology.
MCE-5 says a 2.2-liter engine using its Variable Compression Ratio intelligent technology could generate 330 horsepower at 4,000 rpm and 395 pounds-feet of torque at only 2,000 rpm while returning 21/25 mpg city/highway. In comparison, the 5.4-liter V-8 available in today’s Ford F-150 is rated at 310 hp at 5,000 rpm and 365 pounds-feet at 3,500 rpm, and it gets 14/20 mpg city/highway.
On December 19, 2007, President George W. Bush signed the Energy Independence and Security Act. This Act aims at improving vehicle fuel economy. The Act set a goal for the national fuel economy standard of 35 miles per gallon (mpg) by 2020. This would increase the fuel economy standards by 40 percent and save the United States billions of gallons of fuel.[22] This standard is the first standard that has been set above the Corporate Average Fuel Economy standards (CAFE) since it was created in 1975.
I love this idea. I am tried to trying to park larger cars but not having the options and space they provide. Auto companies will be forced to come up with something that fits the need for everybody. Plus, it will give Detroit something new to do.
Anyway, what ARE we doing about the # of 18 wheelers on the road? I live in TX and am terrified of them (especially those who derrive from Mexico).
Freedom does not include the right to drive a monster SUV or a Hummer.
Freedom is the ability to do what you want without interference by others, short of infringing on others rights. It's the reason we have a written Constitution that says the Federal government can do certain things AND NO OTHERS.
P.S. Deciding whether we can drive SUVs etc. is not among the things the Fed govt is allowed to do. Sorry.

Freedom is good but it must be tempered by regulation for the good of everybody.
It is. The regulation is called the Constitution. If you don't like it, change it. There's a couple ways of doing that.
But until then, our freedom DOES include the ability to drive Hummers without interference from a bunch of do-gooder nanny-state fanatics. Maybe you need to find a job instead of whining and getting in everybody's way.

No, the good of society overrules "freedom to do whatever I want". The problem is people don't use common sense. When they don't do whats good for society of their own free will then sooner or later the State will step in and make them. It's happens all the time.
Obama to announce jobs killing fuel standards on Friday
Yep, no commonsense fuel standards. No considerations for individual liberty and choice. Obama will roll out his new federal fuel standards guaranteed to kill jobs and greatly damage the automotive industry and support industries. Basically it is an "electric car" mandate.

It's not an electric car mandate. If companies truly cared about the well-being of their customers and society in general, they would have pushed for more R&D.
50+ mpg gasoline engines are not impossible. Companies will have to adapt. They have done so in Europe; why not in America? And as far as I know, Europe is not broke and not jobless as a result of such regulations.

Reason: off topic
Liberals hate the car and the freedom of travel it allows for, and want everyone on the bus or train to get to their government job.
the good of the collective and all that
