After my husband was layed off from a company that brought him and 350 other families down from NYC. He tried to find another job here in Tampa, but has had only 1 interview. Unemployment services has funding for re-education so he can better his changes to find another job. This is thanks to Obama.

Our Cobra payments are going to be $1,800 a month, but thanks to Obama, they will only be $600 a month.

What a terrible thing! He must be a socialist.

So that is $5000 plus $1200 a month. Works out to almost $20,000 for the first year.
That is for one family.

Where is the money coming from?

The $5,000 is to get my husband working again and paying taxes. The $1,200 is only while we have Cobra, not forever. $20,000 is nothing to the massive expenses the government pays and this will get my husband back to work. I say that is a sound $20,000 investment! We could go on to welfare and get nothing to help him find work and the government would pay much more than $20,000 a year for how how many years? I could sign my kids up for kidcare and the government would have to pay anyway. The $20,000 investment is cheaper in the long run.

Unemployment does just hand over the money. You have to prove that you are unemployable with your current skills. Meet with their counsellors, look through their database of job listings, try to get interviews. If you still cannot find work, then they make you do other things. It took him over 2 months to get approval and you have to go to an approved facility. You can't take the money and decide to take dance lessons with it.

Then I think you should have to pay it back like a student loan down the road when you are back on your feet.

Someone is paying for this, you are only happy because you are reaping the benefits from this.

Don't get me wrong, I am all for helping people who have been laid off.

But many people who have been laid off dropped insurance coverage because COBRA was so expensive while they were out of work in the past.

I feel if you benefit from going back to school, you should pay it back, and replenish the pot so to speak.

I don't know about FL but that was standard in CA to get an extension on your unemployment or assistance if you went back to school and learned new skills.

Pay it forward. I feel you should have to pay the $5,000 back at some point.

Once again, you can credit Republicans, NOT OBAMA. This program and others just like it has been in place for ages.

For example
Job Training Bill Conference Degenerates; Administration Threatens Veto as GOP, Democrats Begin Pointing Fingers - The Washington Post | Encyclopedia.com (http://www.encyclopedia.com/doc/1P2-790018.html - broken link)
bipartisan job training bill that passed both houses of Congress by overwhelming margins staggered out of a conference committee after 10 months of contentious meetings yesterday without the support of a single Democrat and with two Cabinet secretaries threatening a presidential veto if it moves another step.

Remind me again what Obama was doing in 1996 and who was president that DID NOT SUPPORT job training bill?

If you want Obama to be given credit, tell me what bill he passed creating NEW funding..

Are you claiming your husband would not have gone back to work without the money?

Than maybe you should be the one making the "sound investment" rather than expecting me to, or even worse, our children, tell me again how our children, who will be paying back the debt created by you, will benefit?

Ahh, see there you have an argument, ONLY if I supported the existance of welfare.. which I dont.. You didnt save any money during the period of time that your husband was working? Now you expect us to pay for your incompetence while you thank Obama for a bill that he had nothing to do with?.. Yeah.. lets all sit around and play pattycake and spend our children into bankruptcy because people like you exist in america..

Now you are twisting words around. If they can't find a job in whatever field they are in for whatever reason, then it makes perfect sense to be retrained in a field that does have jobs open. That will be much cheaper and better for all of us then for them to be forced to go on welfare because they can't feed theselves and with no skills to find a job.

I don't think the poster meant she would just automatically go on welfare just because. They would be FORCED to if they can't feed their kids.

You have to look at the big picture. I understand the frustration but it is better for the whole country, including you and me who won't get a dime, to have an educated and current workforce. It will pay off in the end for us too!

Now there are plenty of other things that I have issues with. Job training and Cobra assistance, I don't have issues with which is what the OP was talking about.

An individual is responsible for their family, I am not.. When you understand the difference then you'll understand why if the training was good to her family, she should be paying for it.. PERIOD.. I'm tired of everyone thinking that because its good for them, the taxpayers should pay for it.. Hell, I'd like to have an indoor swimming pool so I can get exercise in the winter, maybe there is a taxprogram for that..

And just for the record, I believe this is the job training that the OP was referring to and it was Obama who put it through:
