The proposals would completely reshape the state’s social service network, transforming California from one of the country’s most generous states to one of the most tightfisted. The proposals are intended to help close a budget deficit estimated at $21.3 billion.

Its on its way. One reason so many people end up on some kind of government aid is they can't stretch their lowend wages or disability far enough. There are plenty of people who work who barely eat so they can afford a motel room. The cost of living and cost of housing is extremely high. A one bedroom apartment can run 8 to 9 hundred dollars a month, and you need to show triple that in income to rent. Even a room in the area where I lived was going for 700. Lets say you get about 900 a month. That means your phone (which you need for a job, and need a cell for a rented room, car and food which is very expensive have to be juggled.

And with a few thousand people showing up for five clerical jobs at times, that work isn't there. Not even mentioning the illegal factor.

All the foodbanks right now are running out. They are being overrun with those who never went to one before. Some cities prohibit churches from serving food to the homeless. That open charity by church and community has become harder to find and there are roadblocks where that is.

The core problem in California is that there are simply too many people. You can only have so many jobs. Perhaps we need a system where people can use the skills they have for volunteer work and be "paid" in food and rental assistance. The work would be suitable to count as experience on a "real" job so they could get out. There are many things needing to be done, and skills that need to be practiced and enhansed and learned. Why not encourage a procuctive and skilled populace? Why not let people offer their services through a local office where those needing something could go? Many things could even be done online.

There are solutions, but we have to go beyond the box to see them. Saying cut them all off or we just can't isn't doing that.

Default From a welfare worker

Your state's welfare system is a BIG scam and everyone else knows it. I am a welfare worker in another state and the problem is that in every other state we have one state-wide computerized tracking system for benefits. In California, it is managed at the county level, so a family can get welfare cash and food stamps in one county, then go to all the surrounding counties and get benefits too and there is no cross checking going on. They are only limited by how far they are willing to drive and rent a PO box. There will be a MASS EXODUS from California if this happens. Too many of your citizens are spoiled by the incompetence of the government. They'll get a rude awakening from other states who actually track their benefits. I guess that is just job security for me, since I work in one of those neighboring states who will be invaded.

Wow!

Let's see...workforce to population is ~1/2...CA population is ~38 million...

Therefore, workers can expect $8.26 extra on their paychecks...wait...that's per year. It's an extra 16 cents per week. Whoopie! Who's buying? Make mine Juicy Fruit...check that...I'll have a stick of Doublemint!

Yeah, let's put poor children on the street so you can have an extra stick of gum per week.

I felt a great disturbance in the Force, as if millions of voices of government employees suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced.

Their parents/guardians will find another way to support them other than taxpayer funds (like getting a job).

If not theres always charity. They are ready and willing to help.

My main concern is whether or not there will be a corresponding tax cut to accompany the cult in welfare services. Perhaps it might
give productive people a reason to stay.
