Any thoughts on the possibility of Colin Powell or any moderate Republican starting up a new party. People always seem to be solidly on the right or solidly on the left - but what about a more centrist Republican party that will address the gap?
If so, Powell won't be the one heading it up. It takes a LOT of effort to start a successful party in America, and I don't think he's up to a task that great at this time in his life.

Not according to what I heard him say on Meet the Press. He is still a Republican, whether or not some want to make him something else because he backed the candidate that he felt was best for the nation, that just makes him an American, which in my book is pretty good company.

If he doesn't, he'll remain a man without a country.
So, to You all Independents are people without a country because they do not follow every idea from one party or another? Sorry, but if nothing else he is an American and this country is as much his as it is yours.

Ron Paul belongs in a new party much more than Colin Powell ever did, yet RP is still trying to infiltrate the existing Republican party and install a pro-peace, pro-liberty version of it. Having a moderate party will just be a watered down version of the Dem/Rep split. A party without principles, much like the Dems became after shrugging off Obama's WAR and pro-patriot act policies.

I find the logic in that argument to be a bit strained. From my standpoint Ron Paul's positions are as much an anathema to base Republicans as Powell, so to say that Powell's approach would be the basis for an unprincipled party seem strange since Powell is more in-line with the Republican Party that held power up and until the rise of Bush 43. Was the Party without principles before 2000?

That would be a joke. Why not just run John McCain again?
The reason the Republicans lost the last election is it's departure from conservatism. What we need are people like Sarah Palin, and Michelle Bachman. Mike Pence possibly (not sure how strong a conservative he is, but he's a good start). Mitch McConnel?
