Our bomabots seem to shy away from those nasty "I told you so" threads so I thought I would post up another hole forming in your family budget.

How about a 10% national sales tax.

Taxes only on those nasty rich people, sure.

Once Considered Unthinkable, U.S. Sales Tax Gets Fresh Look
Levy Viewed as Way to Reduce Deficits, Fund Health Reform

With budget deficits soaring and President Obama pushing a trillion-dollar-plus expansion of health coverage, some Washington policymakers are taking a fresh look at a money-making idea long considered politically taboo: a national sales tax.
And for the internet search impaired among us:

A national sales tax, like a flat tax, is a regressive tax. It would impact those folks who have the least discretionary income the hardest.

Is that wise tax policy? Neither the right nor the left seems to think so.

You have that right. hussein obama and the Democrats are only going to hurt the poor the most. I thought they were the big defenders of the poor.

inflation also hurts the poor, so NObama is going to hurt them either way. But, he puts together a great audience!

This is not an administration proposal.

From the link:

A White House official said a VAT is "unlikely to be in the mix" as a means to pay for health-care reform. "While we do not want to rule any credible idea in or out as we discuss the way forward with Congress, the VAT tax, in particular, is popular with academics but highly controversial with policymakers," said Kenneth Baer, a spokesman for White House Budget Director Peter Orszag.

I agree with a national sales tax. just as long as they scrap the income tax and all other taxes. don't punish people for investing, tax the ones who buy too much.

"some Washington policymakers are taking a look"?

sales tax might be the fairest way, though.

"'Most lawmakers are still looking for 'a painless source of revenue' to overhaul the health-care system and dig the nation out of debt, Burman said. 'Who knows?' he added. 'Maybe the tooth fairy will bring that to them.'"

a painless way? how about huge salary cuts for congress, and the rest of washington. also, we can take away their insane benefits. they can start with that.
