Ford mortgaged its assets, including factories, to raise billions in cash to restructure in 2006. Whether it was pure luck or good business by the leadership, it sure paid off in this economic environment. This was new territory for Ford, as the other big automakers had mortgaged assets many times over the years. This Ace in the Hole put Ford in a decent position, no thanks to the Unions, but to the CEO. The way I see it, the UAW owes Ford for it's brilliant move.

What if the government and union owned Chrysler and General Motors order a strike at Ford to make them go broke?

By the time the standards go into effect they will probably raise it to 50mpg.
