its more complex than this.

I think it's all about money. You have a young man growing up in an poverty and see's his choices as work a minimum wage job in hopes of advancing, or selling drugs and making quick and pretty good money. When they see guys with thousands of dollars and an easy lifestyle as opposed to that of some one who makes $8 hour it's easy to see why the choose.

Something that needs to be added is that Raymond Washington who started the Crips(first known as the Baby Cribs)wanted to pattern his new organization after the Black Panthers to protect his community. But being teenagers and not having any guidence because of the clamp down on the Panthers by Hoover they eventually evolved into a street gang and in response to this the Bloods formed from already existing smaller gangs to fight off this new Crips gang. So would Washington's Baby Cribs had evolved into the Crips had he had better guidence from those leaders who were taken out by Hoover's cointelpro?

Well, if Hoover started them does that mean they're dressing in drag in their clubhouses?

When it's said that the Hoover's FBI caused the Crips to form it's more indirect. Meaning, him clamping down on the Panthers and other Black leaders particulary in L.A left a leadership void that was filled by the Crips and Bloods in those communities.

It's confusing.

It seems like they want to live in this country but run and live under their rules.
Panthers had some communist influence and today's New Black Panthers--three of whom were sprung by BO's "Justice Department" after being convicted of voter intimidation--are for all intents and purposes black reds.

Panthers were/are an organized crime outfit. It is the FBI's business to deal with them. They killed people, including their own if they strayed, and robbed and generally wreaked havoc.

There are always unintended consequences, especially from big actions like dealing with organized crime like the BP.

Just for the sake of debate, what do you think caused it then? I think we can all agree that the 1980s represented a high water mark for inner city crime and decay.

The Reagan administration was supposed to be the zenith of "just say no" "zero-tolerance" approaches to drugs and crime, right?

Crime in the Black community skyrocketed when large numbers of Black men became dead beat dads who impregnated Black women and than abandoned them. Communities where the majority of people were not raised in a 2 parent household breed alot of crime and poverty.

Most Black men in prison are the offspring of dead beat dads and single mothers.

Ronald Reagan did not put a gun to Black men's heads telling them to abandon their kids.

We're not naive enough to believe this began in the 1980s either, are we?

So what caused the acceleration of these problems during this time period? I guess I wasn't specific enough.

ftr, I'm not really trying to hang this on Reagan singularly. Maybe the question is what did the Reagan administration do to try and solve this problem? Pumping billions into the drug war and building prisons didn't help too much, looking back on it all. Wouldn't you agree?
