I think the thinking is that had the FBI left the Black Panthers alone in both L.A and Chicago(Fred Hampton shooting)this would have had a neutralizing affect on the gang influence in these two cities. Black organizations like the Panthers would have provided an alternative to the gang influence by directing young people in a more political direction instead of a criminal direction.
WHAT in the name of the tooth fairy makes you think that the Black Panthers would be any better than the Bloods or the Crips by now?Same element,different times.And as for "leadership"...you would want your kids to model themselves after Black Panther party members?That's ignorance at it's very highest imo.
There's a view out there that by the FBI through Hoover's Cointelpro program bringing down the Black Panthers this indirectly help to lead to the creation of the Crips and Bloods because this disrupted Black leadership that could have prevented these gangs formation. Well, that is simplistic and it doesn't take into account things like personal responsibility or the fact that the Crips (and many other gangs in Los Angeles) were around the same time (and many gangs, before) the Black Panthers.
But the Black Panthers did provide a lot of blac men with a purpose and they did do a lot of good work in the community. Granted, there were a lot of thugs in the Black Panthers and it seems like every former street thug who became a Pather and then reverted back to his old thuggish manners was "framed" by the police according to most Leftists and many black people, but I'll gladly give credit where credit is due.
But what a lot of people don't seem to understand is that hopelessness and anger are not uncommon in the ghetto. You have a lot of people who are angry about real and imagined injustice and feel that they are stuck with their lot in life no matter what. The Black Panthers tapped into that and generally encouraged political action and charity, it gave a lot of young black men (many of them without fathers) a purpose and encouraged them to do something positive. You will not find many people more individualistic and pro-personal responsibility than me, but we all know that social groups can have a positive or negative effect on behavior. You know what other groups give people an outlet for their anger and hopelessness? Gangs. Instead of a group encourging reading, social action, and pride in your community, you get a lot of fatherless teenage boys looking up to groups with "philosophies" like "F--k the world" or "Get rich by whatever means" or "Working people are prey".
Hey, I don't agree with everything the Black Panthers stood for and there were way too many extremists and thugs in their ranks, but if I had a choice between having some Black Panthers or some Crips/Bloods/Zoe Pound/Gotti Boys/Vice Lords/GDs down the street from me; I'd pick the Panthers.

No the Panthers weren't a part of the civil rights leadership of King but the Panthers did have a significant following and influence whether you agreed with them or not.
Panthers were/are an organized crime outfit. It is the FBI's business to deal with them.
Lets's not act like Hoover's cointelpro tactics were done for ethical reasons. Hoover was well known for using unethical and illegal tactics against people including against the Panthers.
