I think it was a sincere apology. He did the right thing, and Palin should accept it and move on. Nothing the network does to him is as bad as the treatment he is likely getting at home.

After the Bush daughters were arrested, Laura was on one of the mornng news shows. They asked her something about the incident, and she said "I am their mother", and that was it. None of this raging that Sarah did that I saw on CNN.
