It would appear this cages have been in use for many many years without other deaths.
Has there been negligence here? Yes, no doubt but I'm wondering if the outrage would be as high if this was some male prisoner in there for rape.

There's no way the outrage would be at this level if it were about a male. Still, that doesn't diminish this case. Hopefully, changes will be made that make things better for everyone.

I think old cold's specification of "male rapist" is important. If it were a male who was mentally ill and incarcerated for a nonviolent offense, there would likely be some outrage. If he were a rapist, showing any empathy would be very unpopular and frowned upon.

Yes, it would.

No, the REALLY sad thing is that the Arizona Department of Corrections let the woman die in a cage which was left out in the heat and sun with no shade and no water.

This woman was retarded! You post is BS. Just a backhanded way of insulting the woman, yet again. You have not a clue what that woman wanted in her life, not a single clue.

What do you mean by 'many others like her"? How do YOU know what she was like?

Yeah, we've got a lot of that "compassionate conservatism" in Arizona. This is the Wild Wild West, you know, and we have to keep up that image, regardless of the cost. After all, if we started being humane to prisoners, we'd be "soft on crime".

I see nothing to sugges that "This woman was retarded." The descriptive in the original article said, "Powell, who was serving a more than two-year sentence and had a history of drug addiction and mental illness,"

It's not in the originally cited article; it's noted here:

Phoenix - Feathered Bastard - Marcia Powell Update: Her Guardian, the Cages, and a Friend from Perryville Speaks

Quote:
The fiduciary's office has been Powell's guardian since being appointed July 7, 2008. Prior to this, there was a guardian ad litem, an attorney appointed by the court to be her guardian. Court documents from last year list Powell's "alleged disabilities" as "disorganized schizophrenia, polysubstance abuse, and mild mental retardation."
HTH!

A lot? Some, sure - but I am conservative and I don't believe that she deserved death in a cage for christs sake.
And I don't that I am in the minority.

They should be arrested if they try to profit from her death when they did nothing to prevent her getting to the place where it was possible. Does that mean I think the prison should be absolved of responsibility? Of course not. I believe the responsibility for her death lies squarely on their shoulders, and they should be made to deal with it.
Well, it appears that you have the luxuary of not being related to a mentally ill/drug addicted/alcholic/all three person.
You cannot 'make' someone take their medication anymore then you can 'make' someone stay clean. You may allow a mentally ill person to stay in your home, but that is no guarantee that they will remain there. It may not make sense to us - you know, sane people - but mentally ill people particularily with paranoid schizophrenia complicated with drug/alcohol abuse actually prefer to live on the streets. And there is not a damn thing a parent/sister/aunt/child of an adult mentally ill homeless person can do about it.

Count your blessings that you are so ignorant of what life with the mentally ill is like.
