I am interested on what people’s opinions would be regarding an upcoming possible move in of a developmentally disabled woman to my neighbor’s house.
I only ask for opinions due to concerns I have of the potential move in and the woman’s well being.
We live in an extremely rural area so zero direct access to public facilities like the library, public parks, mass transit, shopping, or medical facilities. All are at least 20+ miles away.
My concern comes from the fact that my neighbor has no experience with developmentally disabled people and has stated her interest more than once of the financial compensation aspect for housing the woman. This woman has the emotional capacity of an 8-11 year old even though she is in her early thirties. Also, this same neighbor has expressed an interest in moving away from here in the next 2-3 years or less maybe. My neighbor also works full time and is gone from home by 6:30am to at least 4pm or later frequently. The disabled woman’s sister does live in the next town over, but has intentions of also moving within the next 1-3 years or less. She does not intend to take her sister. Neither does her other sister or their parents.
I have worked in 3 different facilities over the last 15 years with a wide range of disabled persons and I also have a Down Syndrome cousin who is now in her 40's. I am curious what any given state does to regulate the private in home "care" provided by a person with no licensing or training. Who provides supervision to ensure the life of the disabled person is held to the highest level of respect and overall quality?
I am not trying to cast a dark shadow on the life of my neighbor, but I do wonder what others might think of the motives I have stated. Thank you in advance for your time and consideration of my query.
